Reconnu et estim\u00e9, le luthier a sans conteste marqu\u00e9 l\u2019histoire de la guitare. Ses cr\u00e9ations tr\u00e8s recherch\u00e9es par les musiciens et sp\u00e9cialistes ont atteint un rare niveau de perfection. N\u00e9 le 16 janvier 1932 \u00e0 Paris, Daniel Friederich est issu d’une famille d’\u00e9b\u00e9nistes et a grandi dans le quartier du Faubourg Saint-Antoine \u00e0 Paris, o\u00f9 se trouvaient les ateliers d’\u00e9b\u00e9nisterie de la capitale. C\u2019est l\u00e0 qu\u2019il va se former \u00e0 l\u2019art de la lutherie. En 1948, il ach\u00e8te sa premi\u00e8re guitare et prend des cours avec Christian Aubin. \u00c0 cette \u00e9poque, Aubin \u00e0 la fois guitariste et luthier, terminait la fabrication d\u2019une guitare d\u2019apr\u00e8s un mod\u00e8le d\u2019Antonio de Torres. C\u2019est en suivant cet exemple que Friederich va r\u00e9aliser sa premi\u00e8re guitare en 1955.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

C\u2019est aussi gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 Aubin que Friederich va rencontrer une autre personnalit\u00e9 majeure de la lutherie des ann\u00e9es 1950 : Robert Bouchet. Mondialement reconnu, Bouchet est \u00e9galement fortement marqu\u00e9 par la perfection des guitares de Torres. Tous les trois essaient de percer les myst\u00e8res de la beaut\u00e9 de ces guitares, et particuli\u00e8rement de la Torres FE23. Bouchet se lie alors d’amiti\u00e9 avec Friederich, qui l\u2019assiste d\u00e8s lors dans son travail et s’impr\u00e8gne de son approche peu orthodoxe de la fabrication des guitares.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

A la fin des ann\u00e9es 1950, Friederich ouvre son premier magasin au n\u00b0 21 de la rue Ramponneau et met au point trois mod\u00e8les – l’Arp\u00e8ge<\/em>, le R\u00e9cital<\/em> et le Concert<\/em> – ainsi que quelques mod\u00e8les de flamenco. En 1966, il s’installe rue Sergent Bauchat, dans le quartier des \u00e9b\u00e9nistes, o\u00f9 il restera jusqu’\u00e0 la retraite.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Il participe l\u2019ann\u00e9e suivante \u00e0 un concours de lutherie \u00e0 Li\u00e8ge au cours duquel il re\u00e7oit une m\u00e9daille d\u2019or et une m\u00e9daille d\u2019argent, d\u00e9cern\u00e9es par le c\u00e9l\u00e8bre compositeur Joaquin Rodrigo, le virtuose Alirio Diaz et les luthiers Robert Bouchet et Ignacio Fleta. La rencontre avec ce dernier l’am\u00e8nera \u00e0 travailler pour la famille Fleta par la suite. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u00c0 partir de 1970, Friederich ne fabrique plus que des mod\u00e8les Concert<\/em> num\u00e9rot\u00e9s, qui se distinguent par des t\u00eates sculpt\u00e9es devenues sa signature. Cette ann\u00e9e-l\u00e0, il commence \u00e0 amincir les \u00e9clisses, g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement avec de l’acajou ou du palissandre de couleur claire et plus tard du sapelli. Puis, en 1974, il introduit le c\u00e8dre pour les tables d’harmonie, dont l\u2019un des premiers exemples est la guitare n\u00b0378 fabriqu\u00e9e pour l\u2019illustre musicien sud-am\u00e9ricain Turibio Santos.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Friederich ayant tr\u00e8s vite acquis une grande renomm\u00e9e, la plupart de ses clients sont des guitaristes connus. On conserve d\u2019ailleurs de nombreuses archives sur la provenance des guitares, puisque chaque instrument a \u00e9t\u00e9 scrupuleusement document\u00e9 dans les carnets du luthier, avec des notes d\u00e9taill\u00e9es sur la construction et les caract\u00e9ristiques tonales.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Enfin, soulignons que Daniel Friederich, tout en \u00e9tant passionn\u00e9, a toujours eu une approche rationnelle de la fabrication des instruments. Consciencieux, chacune de ses guitares r\u00e9sulte d\u2019un travail approfondi et d\u2019une multitude de tests et de mesures. D\u00e8s le d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 60, il int\u00e8gre \u00e0 cette fin le laboratoire d’acoustique de l’universit\u00e9 Paris IV, o\u00f9 il m\u00e8ne des exp\u00e9rimentations dans le but d’am\u00e9liorer la guitare. C\u2019est une des raisons pour lesquelles ses instruments sont aujourd\u2019hui tant recherch\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Bien que s\u2019inspirant des plus beaux mod\u00e8les anciens, comme les guitares de Torres, Daniel Friederich en propose des mod\u00e8les am\u00e9lior\u00e9s sur le plan technique – conf\u00e9rant un son et une acoustique perfectionn\u00e9s. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Par cons\u00e9quent, ses instruments sont de v\u00e9ritables joyaux consid\u00e9r\u00e9s et estim\u00e9s par les plus grands. Le monde de la lutherie perd ainsi l\u2019un de ses plus dignes repr\u00e9sentants…<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Le 4 novembre 2023, deux guitares embl\u00e9matiques de Daniel Friederich seront propos\u00e9es \u00e0 la vente \u00e0 Vichy Ench\u00e8res. La premi\u00e8re dat\u00e9e de 1963 porte le num\u00e9ro 105 et l\u2019\u00e9tiquette originale mentionnant la toute premi\u00e8re adresse du luthier : 21 rue Ramponneau \u00e0 Paris, o\u00f9 il \u0153uvra de la fin des ann\u00e9es 1950 \u00e0 1966.\u00a0La seconde, plus tardive, a \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9alis\u00e9e en 1994 et porte le num\u00e9ro 725 et l\u2019\u00e9tiquette de la rue Sergent Bauchat, toujours \u00e0 Paris, ainsi que la marque au fer imprim\u00e9e sur le tasseau du manche.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

It is with sadness that we learnt of the death of the man who was considered one of the finest French contemporary guitar makers: Daniel Friederich. He was a famous and esteemed maker who made a mark on the history of guitar making. His creations, which are highly sought after by musicians and experts, attained a rare level of perfection. Vichy Ench\u00e8res is proud to have had the privilege of selling some of his instruments. Let\u2019s take a look back at one of the key figures of French guitar making.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Daniel Friederich was born on 16 January 1932 in Paris, into a family of cabinetmakers, and grew up in the district of the Faubourg Saint-Antoine in Paris, where the cabinetmaking workshops of the capital were located. This is where he learnt the art of guitar making. In 1948, he bought his first guitar and took lessons with Christian Aubin. At that time, Aubin, who was both guitarist and maker, was putting the final touch to a guitar based on a model by Antonio de Torres. This example was the inspiration for Friederich\u2019s first guitar of 1955.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

It is also thanks to Aubin that Friederich met another important figure of 1950s guitar making: Robert Bouchet. Bouchet, who was world famous, was also strongly influenced by the perfection of Torres’ guitars. All three makers tried to unravel the mysteries behind the beauty of these guitars, in particular the Torres FE23 example. Bouchet befriended Friederich, who went on to assist him in his work and discovered his unorthodox approach to guitar making.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

At the end of the 1950s, Friederich opened his first shop at 21 rue Ramponneau, where he developed mainly three models \u2013 the Arp\u00e8ge<\/em>, the R\u00e9cital<\/em> and the Concert<\/em> \u2013 as well as a few flamenco models. In 1966, he moved to rue Sergent Bauchat, in the cabinetmakers’ quarter, where he remained until his retirement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The following year, he took part in a guitar making competition in Li\u00e8ge during which he received a gold and a silver medal, awarded by the famous composer Joaquin Rodrigo, the virtuoso Alirio Diaz and makers Robert Bouchet and Ignacio Fleta. The meeting with the latter led him to work for the Fleta family thereafter.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

From 1970, Friederich only made individually numbered Concert<\/em> models, distinguishable by the carved heads that had become his trademark. That year, he began to make the sides of his guitars, which were usually of mahogany or light-coloured rosewood, and later sapele, thinner. Then, in 1974, he introduced cedar for his guitar fronts; one of the first examples of these was on guitar no. 378 made for the famous South American musician Turibio Santos.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Friederich quickly acquired a great reputation and most of his customers were well-known guitarists. It is possible to trace the provenance of the guitars, as each instrument was painstakingly documented in the notebooks of the maker, with detailed notes on the construction and the tonal characteristics.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Finally, we should point out that, while Daniel Friederich was a passionate maker, he always had a rational approach to the manufacture of his instruments. He was meticulous, and each of his guitars is the result of in-depth work and various tests and measurements. In the early 1960s, he joined the acoustics laboratory of the University of Paris IV with the purpose of conducting experiments in order to improve the guitar. This is one of the reasons why his instruments are so sought after today.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Although drawing inspiration from the most beautiful historic models, such as the Torres guitars, Daniel Friederich created models with technical innovations, which resulted in improved sound and acoustics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result, his instruments are true masterpieces, considered and esteemed by the greatest. The world of guitar making therefore lost one of its most worthy representatives<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

On November 4, 2023, two iconic guitars by Daniel Friederich will be offered for sale at Vichy Ench\u00e8res. The first, dated 1963, bears the number 105 and the original label mentioning the luthier’s very first address: 21 rue Ramponneau in Paris, where he worked from the late 1950s to 1966.\u00a0The second, made later in 1994, bears the number 725 and the rue Sergent Bauchat label, still in Paris, as well as the iron mark printed on the neck cleat.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
