Les ventes des 6 et 7 mai ont confirm\u00e9 la place unique de Vichy Ench\u00e8res sur le march\u00e9 des instruments \u00e0 vent et \u00e0 cordes pinc\u00e9es. Ces derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es, nos ventes dans cette sp\u00e9cialit\u00e9 n\u2019ont cess\u00e9 de prendre de l\u2019ampleur et de gagner en qualit\u00e9. Les 6 et 7 mai 2022, celles-ci ont \u00e0 nouveau battu le record dans cette sp\u00e9cialit\u00e9, apr\u00e8s celui de novembre dernier<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Seule maison de ventes \u00e0 proposer une offre aussi \u00e9clectique et qualitative, Vichy Ench\u00e8res s\u2019impose comme pr\u00e9curseur et leader sur le march\u00e9 des instruments \u00e0 vent et \u00e0 cordes pinc\u00e9es. Une fois n\u2019est pas coutume, les ventes des 6 et 7 mai ont \u00e9t\u00e9 l\u2019occasion de ressortir de l\u2019ombre du pass\u00e9 des mod\u00e8les in\u00e9dits, venant enrichir notre connaissance de l\u2019histoire des instruments de musique.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Entre d\u00e9couvertes de pi\u00e8ces historiques, raret\u00e9s et instruments de grands et petits ma\u00eetres, ces ventes ont sans surprise su r\u00e9jouir les musiciens, historiens passionn\u00e9s et connaisseurs. Merci \u00e0 vous d\u2019\u00eatre toujours plus nombreux et enthousiastes. Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 vous, cette ann\u00e9e encore, plusieurs records ont \u00e9t\u00e9 battus. Le 1er<\/sup> pianoforte de France : record pour un piano de Mercken et pour un mod\u00e8le d\u2019Ancien R\u00e9gime<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Le lot phare de la vente \u00e9tait ind\u00e9niablement le pianoforte en forme de clavecin de Jean-Kilien Mercken (1743-1819), un instrument historique puisqu\u2019il s\u2019agit certainement du plus vieux piano r\u00e9alis\u00e9 en France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inconnu jusque-l\u00e0, ce \u201cpianoforte en forme de clavecin\u201d – ainsi qu\u2019on appelait les pianos \u00e0 queue avant le XIX\u00e8me si\u00e8cle – a remis en perspective l\u2019histoire de la facture fran\u00e7aise de pianos et est venu \u00e9clairer un autre pan de la production de Mercken, uniquement connu pour ses pianofortes carr\u00e9s. Comme l\u2019indiquent Marie-Christine et Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Weber dans l\u2019ouvrage de r\u00e9f\u00e9rence sur Mercken, le premier pianoforte connu construit \u00e0 Paris \u00e9tait jusque-l\u00e0 un mod\u00e8le carr\u00e9 du grand ma\u00eetre, dat\u00e9 1770 et conserv\u00e9 au Conservatoire National des Arts et M\u00e9tiers de Paris.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Ce nouvel instrument r\u00e9alis\u00e9 vers 1767-68 serait donc le plus ancien piano \u00e0 queue fran\u00e7ais parvenu jusqu’\u00e0 nous. C\u2019est \u00e9galement le seul instrument connu de Mercken en forme de clavecin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Estim\u00e9 80.000\/100.000 euros, l\u2019instrument a rejoint la collection d\u2019une c\u00e9l\u00e8bre fondation pour le prix de 223.000 euros (frais compris). Il s\u2019agit d\u2019un record pour un piano de Mercken et, \u00e0 notre connaissance, pour un mod\u00e8le d\u2019Ancien R\u00e9gime. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Record pour un instrument de Charles Bizey<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Lors de la vente du 7 mai 2022, plusieurs records ont \u00e9t\u00e9 battus, dont celui de l\u2019adjudication la plus haute pour un instrument de Charles Bizey (c 1695-1758) – l\u2019un des meilleurs facteurs du XVIII\u00e8me<\/sup> si\u00e8cle. R\u00e9alis\u00e9 vers 1730, ce hautbois offre un parfait exemple de l\u2019excellent savoir-faire de Bizey et annonce la facture des mod\u00e8les de la fin du si\u00e8cle. Propos\u00e9 aux ench\u00e8res sur une estimation de 6.000\/7.500 euros, il s\u2019est envol\u00e9 \u00e0 27.280 euros (frais compris).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Record pour un instrument de Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Triebert<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Cette r\u00e9union d\u2019instruments vous donna \u00e9galement l\u2019opportunit\u00e9 de d\u00e9couvrir un superbe baryton de Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Triebert, dont le mod\u00e8le apparaissait sur le catalogue des instruments de la Maison en 1855\u2026 \u00c0 son propos, Triebert soulignait que sa \u201cqualit\u00e9 de son est belle et [qu\u2019il] ne manque pas de puissance.\u201d Il ajoutait que selon lui, la baryton avait un r\u00f4le important \u00e0 jouer. Cet instrument exceptionnel et rarissime a \u00e9t\u00e9 vendu 10.846 euros (frais compris), un record pour un mod\u00e8le de Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Triebert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Envol\u00e9e des ench\u00e8res pour des clarinettes d\u2019Ottensteiner<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Du c\u00f4t\u00e9 des clarinettes, trois remarquables mod\u00e8les en buis et laiton (Ut, Si-b\u00e9mol et La) r\u00e9alis\u00e9s par Georg Ottensteiner (1815-1879) furent l\u2019objet de toutes les attentions. Estim\u00e9 4.500\/5.000 euros, ce lot s\u2019envola \u00e0 20.000 euros (soit 24.800 euros avec les frais). Ce type d’instrument fut jou\u00e9 par Richard M\u00fchlfeld (1856-1907), le clarinettiste allemand le plus connu de son \u00e9poque. Membre de l\u2019orchestre de la cour ducale de Meiningen, M\u00fchlfeld fut \u00e9galement clarinettiste solo de l\u2019orchestre du festival de Bayreuth de 1884 \u00e0 1896 et joua sous la direction de chefs d\u2019orchestre comme Richard Strauss. En 1879, il devint premi\u00e8re clarinette de l\u2019orchestre d\u2019\u00e9lite de la Cour qui se fit conna\u00eetre en Europe. En 1883 et 1890, le duc de Saxe-Meiningen le nomma Kammermusiker puis directeur musical. Il joua sous la direction de Johannes Brahms avec qui il se lia d\u2019amiti\u00e9. Brahms composa plusieurs \u0153uvres sp\u00e9cialement pour M\u00fchlfeld dont Trio pour clarinette, violoncelle et piano en la mineur<\/em> op. 114 et le Quintette pour clarinette en si mineur op. 115.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cette saison encore, l\u2019offre en fl\u00fbtes fut particuli\u00e8rement remarquable et remarqu\u00e9e. Les plus grands noms de la facture \u00e9taient repr\u00e9sent\u00e9s, dont certains peu fr\u00e9quents, \u00e0 l\u2019instar d\u2019une fl\u00fbte en cristal de Claude Laurent qui trouva acqu\u00e9reur au prix de 19.840 euros (frais compris).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

On notera \u00e9galement une superbe fl\u00fbte \u00e0 bec de I.G. Strehli vendue 19.140 (frais compris) ou encore une fl\u00fbte en argent de Louis Lot, dat\u00e9e 1875, partie \u00e0 10.654 euros (frais compris).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Outre les valeurs s\u00fbres et les mod\u00e8les iconiques, ces ventes ont mis en lumi\u00e8re des instruments rares s\u2019inscrivant comme des jalons dans l\u2019histoire de la facture instrumentale, \u00e0 l\u2019instar d\u2019un exceptionnel instrument d\u2019Antoine Courtois – pr\u00e9coce t\u00e9moignage de sa collaboration avec le virtuose Jean-Baptiste Arban. Accompagn\u00e9 d\u2019une note manuscrite de Courtois et d\u2019une partition con\u00e7ue comme une m\u00e9thode de jeu, ce bugle \u00e0 4 pistons pr\u00e9sente l\u2019un des premiers syst\u00e8mes mis au point par Arban, bien avant son brevet de 1883 pour le syst\u00e8me compensateur. R\u00e9alis\u00e9 vers 1870, ce mod\u00e8le exp\u00e9rimental t\u00e9moignant des recherches d\u2019Arban a trouv\u00e9 acqu\u00e9reur \u00e0 4.593 euros (frais compris).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Une rare trompette circulaire de Raoux jou\u00e9e par Joseph-Gebhardt Kresser ?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Saviez vous que les trompettes n\u2019avaient pas toujours \u00e9t\u00e9 droites ? Elles furent m\u00eame, durant un court laps de temps, circulaires comme des petits cors. Certes, les mod\u00e8les sont rares et peu ont surv\u00e9cu jusqu\u2019\u00e0 nous, mais ils furent, pendant une courte p\u00e9riode de moins de dix ans, pris\u00e9s des musiciens les plus en vue de Paris ! Ainsi, entre 1820 et 1830, la trompette naturelle de forme circulaire fut jou\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019Acad\u00e9mie Royale de Musique et au Th\u00e9\u00e2tre Royal de l\u2019Op\u00e9ra-Comique. Son timbre voil\u00e9 et son aura guerri\u00e8re en firent l\u2019instrument id\u00e9al des compositeurs romantiques.
La d\u00e9couverte d\u2019un remarquable mod\u00e8le de Marcel Auguste Raoux, r\u00e9alis\u00e9 en 1825 pour l\u2019Op\u00e9ra-Comique, nous a permis de nous replonger dans ce bref et intense \u00e9pisode de l\u2019histoire musicale. Exceptionnel par sa raret\u00e9, l\u2019instrument l\u2019est aussi par sa myst\u00e9rieuse histoire, puisqu\u2019en 1825, Joseph-Gebhardt Kresser – l\u2019un des trois trompettistes majeurs de Paris de la premi\u00e8re moiti\u00e9 du XIX\u00e8me<\/sup> si\u00e8cle – jouait pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment \u00e0 l\u2019Op\u00e9ra-Comique\u2026 Estim\u00e9e 5.000\/6.000 euros, la trompette a \u00e9t\u00e9 vendue 10.540 euros (prix avec frais).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La vente du 7 mai 2022 a \u00e9galement r\u00e9joui les amoureux des vielles \u00e0 roue puisqu\u2019un riche ensemble d\u2019une quinzaine de mod\u00e8les de ma\u00eetres provenant de la collection du facteur Raymond Chance fut dispers\u00e9. Facteur et restaurateur d\u2019instruments, Raymond Chance a su, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 son regard expert, choisir des instruments toujours plus int\u00e9ressants les uns que les autres. La partie de sa collection pr\u00e9sent\u00e9e aux ench\u00e8res le 7 mai 2022 en a offert un bel aper\u00e7u en rassemblant des vielles des plus grands noms de la sp\u00e9cialit\u00e9 : Cailhe-D\u00e9cante (1.914 euros, frais compris), Pajot fils (1.786 euros, frais compris) ou encore Pimpart (2.934 euros, frais compris)\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sale of 6 and 7 May confirmed Vichy Ench\u00e8res’ unique position in the wind and plucked string instruments market. In recent years, our sales in this auction category have grown steadily, both in terms of quantity and quality. By being the only auction house to offer an eclectic selection of instruments of great quality, Vichy Ench\u00e8res has established itself as a pioneer and leader in the market for wind and plucked string instruments. Unusually, the sales on 6 and 7 May were an opportunity to bring new models out of the shadows of the past, and widen our knowledge of the history of musical instruments.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Between the discovery of historical pieces, rarities and instruments of masters great and small, it is no wonder these sales delighted musicians, passionate historians and connoisseurs alike.

The first pianoforte in France: record price for a Mercken piano and for an example from the Ancien R\u00e9gime<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

The top lot of the sale was undeniably the harpsichord-shaped pianoforte by Jean-Kilien Mercken (1743-1819), a historic instrument, since it is probably the oldest piano made in France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unknown before the sales, this “pianoforte in the shape of a harpsichord” – as grand pianos were called before the 19th century – put the history of French piano making in perspective and shed light on another aspect of the production of Mercken, known only for his square pianofortes. As Marie-Christine and Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Weber indicate in their reference work on Mercken, the first known fortepiano built in Paris was, until this new discovery, a square example by the great master, dated 1770 and kept at the Conservatoire National des Arts et M\u00e9tiers in Paris.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

This new instrument, made around 1767-68, would therefore be the oldest French grand piano in existence. It is also Mercken’s only known harpsichord-shaped instrument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With an estimate of 80,000\/100,000 euros, the instrument joined the collection of a famous foundation for the price of 223,000 euros (including fees). This is a record for a Mercken piano and, to our knowledge, for a piano dating from the Ancien R\u00e9gime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Record price for an instrument by Charles Bizey<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

During the sale on 7 May 2022, several records were broken, including that of the highest hammer price for an instrument by Charles Bizey (c 1695-1758) – one of the best makers of the 18th<\/sup> century. Made around 1730, this oboe offers a perfect example of Bizey’s excellent making and heralds the craftsmanship of late 18th<\/sup> century instruments. Offered at auction with an estimate of 6,000\/7,500 euros, it sold for 27,280 euros (including fees).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Record price for an instrument by Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Triebert<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This collection of instruments also provided the opportunity to discover a superb baritone example by Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Triebert, whose model appeared in the House’s catalogue of instruments of 1855… In relation to it, Triebert pointed out that its “quality of sound is beautiful and [that it] does not lack in power.\u201d He added that, in his opinion, the baritone oboe had an important role to play. This exceptional and extremely rare instrument sold for 10,846 euros (including fees), a record for an instrument by Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Triebert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Soaring auction prices for Ottensteiner clarinets<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As for the clarinets, three remarkable boxwood and brass examples (C, B-flat and A) made by Georg Ottensteiner (1815-1879) were the focus of much attention. Estimated at 4,500\/5,000 euros, this lot reached 20,000 euros (or 24,800 euros including fees). This type of instrument was played by Richard M\u00fchlfeld (1856-1907), the most famous German clarinettist of his time. A member of the Meiningen Court Orchestra, M\u00fchlfeld was also principal clarinet of the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra from 1884 to 1896 and performed under the direction of conductors as eminent as Richard Strauss. In 1879, he became first clarinet of the Elite Court Orchestra, which became famous in Europe. In 1883 and 1890, the Duke of Saxe-Meiningen appointed him Kammermusiker and then musical director. He played under the direction of Johannes Brahms with whom he became friends. Brahms composed several works especially for M\u00fchlfeld, including the Trio for clarinet, cello and piano in A minor op. 114<\/em> and the Quintet for clarinet in B minor op. 115<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This season again, the selection of flutes on offer was particularly remarkable and did not go unnoticed. The biggest names in the field were represented, with some rare instruments available, like a crystal flute by Claude Laurent which found a buyer at the price of 19,840 euros (including fees).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

We should also mention a superb recorder by I.G. Strehli which sold for 19,140 euros (including fees) and a silver flute by Louis Lot, dated 1875, which sold for 10,654 euros (including fees).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

In addition to safe investments and iconic models, these sales offered at auction rare instruments that constitute milestones in the history of instrument making, such as an exceptional instrument by Antoine Courtois – an early testimony to his collaboration with the virtuoso Jean-Baptiste Arban.
Accompanied by a handwritten note by Courtois and a score intended as a playing method, this four-valve bugle features one of the first mechanisms developed by Arban, long before his 1883 patent for the compensating mechanism. Made around 1870, this experimental model bears witness to Arban’s research and found a buyer at 4,593 euros (including fees).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

A rare circular trumpet by Raoux, possibly played by Joseph-Gebhardt<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Did you know that trumpets were not always straight in shape? Indeed, for a short time, they were circular, like small horns. Admittedly, examples of this type are rare and few have survived until now, but they were, for a short period of less than 10 years, prized by the most preeminent musicians in Paris. Between 1820 and 1830, the circular-shaped natural trumpet was played at the Academie Royale de Musique and at the Theatre Royal de l\u2019Op\u00e9ra-Comique. Its veiled timbre and military association made it an ideal instrument for romantic composers.
The discovery of a remarkable example by Marcel Auguste Raoux, made in 1825 for the Op\u00e9ra-Comique, took us back to this brief and intense episode in the history of music. This instrument is not only exceptional for its rarity, but also its mysterious history, since in 1825, Joseph-Gebhardt Kresser \u2013 one of the three preeminent trumpeters in Paris in the first half of the 19th century \u2013 was indeed performing at the Op\u00e9ra-Comique\u2026 Estimated at 5,000\/6,000 euros, the trumpet sold for 10,540 euros (including fees).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sale of 7 May 2022 also delighted lovers of hurdy-gurdies as it included a large selection of 15 examples by master makers from the collection of maker Raymond Chance. As a maker and restorer of instruments, Raymond Chance had an expert eye and knew how to pick the most interesting instruments. The part of his collection that was auctioned on 7 May 2022 offered a good overview of it since it brought together hurdy-gurdies from the biggest names in the field: Cailhe-D\u00e9cante (1,914 euros, including fees), Pajot fils (1,786 euros, including fees) and Pimpart (2,934 euros, including fees) amongst others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, a superb set of bagpipes, mainly uilleann pipes (i.e. Irish bagpipes), having belonged to the great connoisseur Marc Guilloux, generated a lot of interest.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

In particular, a beautiful example of full set uilleann pipes by Dave Williams found a buyer at 11,428 euros (including fees) and an older anonymous example, estimated at 1,500\/2,000 euros, sold for 5,714 euros (including fees).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
