Lors de la vente de prestige d\u2019instruments du quatuor du 2 juin 2022, une partie de la collection du musicien et ancien directeur de l\u2019Orchestre de l\u2019Op\u00e9ra de Paris, John Cohen, sera dispers\u00e9e aux ench\u00e8res. De grande qualit\u00e9, cette collection d\u2019archets est essentiellement compos\u00e9e de mod\u00e8les d\u2019Eug\u00e8ne Sartory et de Bernard Millant. Celle-ci rend compte de l\u2019\u00e9rudition du musicien et de son exigence qualitative dans le choix de ses instruments. Elle comprend trois mod\u00e8les du meilleur archetier du XX\u00e8me<\/sup> si\u00e8cle, Eug\u00e8ne Sartory, r\u00e9alis\u00e9s \u00e0 trois moments diff\u00e9rents de sa carri\u00e8re et t\u00e9moignant de la constante excellence de son savoir-faire. Les deux autres instruments sont de la main de Bernard Millant, l\u2019une des personnalit\u00e9s les plus marquantes de l\u2019archeterie contemporaine, et font partie de sa p\u00e9riode d\u2019or.  <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Apr\u00e8s deux Premiers Prix de Violon et de Musique de Chambre en 1964 au Conservatoire National Sup\u00e9rieur de Musique de Paris (CNMDP), John Cohen entre sur concours dans la classe de Musique de Chambre professionnelle de Joseph Calvet o\u00f9 il obtient un Premier Prix en 1965.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En 1965 et 1966, il est invit\u00e9 au Festival de Tanglewood et jouera en tant que violon solo avec le Boston Symphony Orchestra<\/em> sous la baguette de Lawrence Foster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En 1966, il fonde le Trio Classique<\/em> de Paris. Cet ensemble s’est produit pendant plus de vingt ans dans le monde entier et a \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e0 l’origine de nombreuses cr\u00e9ations (A. Tisne – A. Weber – A. Louvier …) et d’enregistrements (Trios<\/em> de Schubert<\/em>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De 1968 \u00e0 1972, il est Violon Solo du Collegium Musicum<\/em> de Paris avec lequel il enregistre de nombreux disques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En 1976, il entre comme Premier Violon \u00e0 l’Orchestre de l’Op\u00e9ra National de Paris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parall\u00e8lement, de 1980 \u00e0 1988, il est membre du Quatuor Parrenin<\/em>, ensemble avec lequel il a enregistr\u00e9 plusieurs disques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En 2006, il est nomm\u00e9 par G\u00e9rard Mortier directeur de l’Orchestre de l’Op\u00e9ra de Paris et est promu en 2011, Chevalier des Arts et Lettres.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

John Cohen \u00e9tait un fin connaisseur et sa collection t\u00e9moigne de ses choix \u00e9clair\u00e9s en mati\u00e8re d\u2019instruments, toujours s\u00e9lectionn\u00e9s en fonction de leurs qualit\u00e9s techniques et musicales. Parmi les archetiers qu\u2019il appr\u00e9ciait tout particuli\u00e8rement, Eug\u00e8ne Nicolas Sartory (1871-1946) fut certainement son favori. Nul \u00e9tonnement \u00e0 ce que celui qui est consid\u00e9r\u00e9 comme le plus grand archetier du XX\u00e8me<\/sup> si\u00e8cle, ait s\u00e9duit l\u2019exigeant musicien.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Les trois mod\u00e8les de la vente du 2 juin 2022 confirment l\u2019expertise de John Cohen, qui sut choisir le meilleur de Sartory quelque soit la phase de sa carri\u00e8re.
En effet, les mod\u00e8les ont tous \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9alis\u00e9s \u00e0 diff\u00e9rentes p\u00e9riodes de son activit\u00e9, vers 1900, 1915 et 1930, et rendent ainsi compte du parcours de Sartory, mais surtout de la r\u00e9gularit\u00e9 de son savoir-faire d\u2019exception.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Bernard Georges Louis Millant (1929-2017) fut l\u2019autre grand archetier favori de John Cohen. Celui dont Vichy Ench\u00e8res vendait la collection entre 2017 et 2019<\/a> \u00e9tait aussi tr\u00e8s appr\u00e9ci\u00e9 du musicien.  Personnalit\u00e9 majeure du monde de l\u2019archeterie qu\u2019il pla\u00e7a \u00e0 un niveau jamais atteint, Bernard Millant est tr\u00e8s recherch\u00e9 des collectionneurs et musiciens. Oscillant entre expertise et cr\u00e9ation, sa production d\u2019archets en fut r\u00e9duite et les deux mod\u00e8les en vente le 2 juin 2022 sont de rares opportunit\u00e9s d\u2019acqu\u00e9rir un instrument du ma\u00eetre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ces archets t\u00e9moignent de la grande connaissance de John Cohen, puisqu\u2019ils ont \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9alis\u00e9s durant la meilleure p\u00e9riode de Bernard Millant, vers 1967-1968, alors qu\u2019il venait d\u2019obtenir la m\u00e9daille de bronze du m\u00e9rite et qu\u2019il allait d\u00e9crocher celle d\u2019or \u00e0 Li\u00e8ge en 1969.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the prestigious sale of string quartet instruments on 2 June 2022, part of the collection of musician and former director of the Orchestre de l’Op\u00e9ra de Paris<\/em>, John Cohen, will be sold at auction. This outstanding collection of bows essentially includes examples by Eug\u00e8ne Sartory and Bernard Millant. This shows that the musician was a fine connoisseur of bows and was very demanding in choosing them. It includes three examples by the best bowmaker of the 20th<\/sup> century, Eug\u00e8ne Sartory, made during three different periods of his career and demonstrating the consistent excellence of his craftsmanship. The other two bows are by Bernard Millant, one of the most outstanding personalities in contemporary bow making, and were made during his golden period.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

After two First Prizes in Violin and Chamber Music in 1964 at the Conservatoire National Sup\u00e9rieur de Musique de Paris<\/em> (CNMDP), John Cohen joined, after a competitive admission process, the professional Chamber Music class of Joseph Calvet, where he won a First Prize in 1965.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1965 and 1966, he was invited to the Tanglewood Festival, and was solo violin with the Boston Symphony Orchestra<\/em> under the baton of Lawrence Foster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1966, he founded the Trio Classique de Paris<\/em>. This ensemble performed for more than 20 years all over the world and premiered many new works (A. Tisne – A. Weber – A. Louvier …) and made several records (Trios by Schubert).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From 1968 to 1972, he was solo violin at the Collegium Musicum<\/em> in Paris, with which he made several recordings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

John Cohen was a fine connoisseur, and his collection attests to his enlightened choices in terms of bows, which were always selected according to their technical and musical qualities. Amongst the bow makers he particularly appreciated, Eug\u00e8ne Nicolas Sartory (1871-1946) was probably his favourite. It is no wonder that this bow maker, who is considered the greatest of the 20th century, seduced the demanding musician.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The three examples in the sale of 2 June 2022 confirm John Cohen’s expert eye in the choice of his bows; he knew how to choose the best examples by Sartory, regardless of the period of his career.
Indeed, the bows were all made at different periods of the maker\u2019s career \u2013 around 1900, 1915 and 1930 \u2013 and therefore provide an overview of it, but above all demonstrate the consistency of his exceptional craftsmanship.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The golden period of Bernard Millant<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Bernard Georges Louis Millant (1929-2017) was John Cohen’s other great favourite bow maker. Bernard Millant, whose collection was sold by Vichy Ench\u00e8res between 2017 and 2019<\/a> was also very popular with the musician. He was a major personality in the world of bow making, whose bar he raised to an unprecedented level, and his bows are highly sought after by collectors and musicians. Because he split his time between expertise and new making, his output was limited and therefore the two examples on sale on 2 June 2022 are rare opportunities to acquire a bow made by the master.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These bows demonstrate John Cohen’s great understanding of the maker, since they were made during Bernard Millant’s best period, around 1967-1968, after he had just obtained the bronze medal of merit and was about to win that of gold in Li\u00e8ge in 1969.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
