Lors de notre vente de lutherie de prestige qui se tenait le 2 juin 2022 \u00e0 Vichy Ench\u00e8res, la famille Simon \u00e9tait particuli\u00e8rement bien repr\u00e9sent\u00e9e, avec quatre instruments de Nicolas Simon, dit Simon FR, et deux archets de Pierre Simon – le seul archetier de la famille \u00e0 avoir quitt\u00e9 Mirecourt pour rejoindre la capitale. Particuli\u00e8rement int\u00e9ressants, ces deux instruments r\u00e9alis\u00e9s vers 1845 et 1850, se font le reflet des collaborations parisiennes de Pierre Simon et nous donnent ainsi l\u2019occasion de revenir sur l’\u0153uvre et la vie de ce ma\u00eetre de plus en plus recherch\u00e9.   <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Une grande famille de luthiers de Mirecourt <\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Pierre Simon (1808-1881) est certainement le membre le plus connu d\u2019une grande famille d\u2019archetiers de Mirecourt, r\u00e9partis en deux branches. Une premi\u00e8re compos\u00e9e de Pierre Simon et de son fr\u00e8re Barth\u00e9l\u00e9my Simon (1811-1884), qui signait probablement du nom de famille de sa femme \u201cPIERROT\u201d ainsi que de son neveu Dominique Jean-Baptiste Simon (1843-apr\u00e8s 1856).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Une seconde comprenant \u00e9galement deux fr\u00e8res, Jean Simon (1804-1863), son fils Nicolas Simon (1835-1880) qui signait \u201cSIMON.N\u201d et Nicolas Simon (1806-1864) – le seul archetier de la famille \u00e0 avoir sign\u00e9 ses instruments par l\u2019\u00e9nigmatique marque \u201cSIMON FR\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Parmi les hypoth\u00e8ses formul\u00e9es pour lever le myst\u00e8re sur cette signature, la plus probable assimile le \u201cFR\u201d aux premi\u00e8res lettres du nom de jeune fille de la femme de Nicolas Simon, Madeleine Fr\u00e9binet. A cette \u00e9poque, il \u00e9tait en effet commun que les luthiers utilisent le nom de leur \u00e9pouse pour l\u2019associer \u00e0 leur activit\u00e9 ou dans le but de se d\u00e9marquer de certains confr\u00e8res (un autre exemple connu est Dominique HENRY qui signait \u201cHENRY.JV\u201d pour JonVaux le nom de sa femme). L\u2019autre hypoth\u00e8se voudrait que \u201cFR\u201d soit l\u2019abr\u00e9viation de \u201cfr\u00e8res\u201d, en r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e0 une collaboration entre deux fr\u00e8res de la famille Simon, mais celle-ci semble improbable compte tenu de l\u2019absence d\u2019archives et de t\u00e9moignages. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

En outre, dans le cas des fr\u00e8res Pierre et Barth\u00e9l\u00e9my Simon, une collaboration est inenvisageable puisque Pierre est rapidement parti travailler \u00e0 Paris. Il est donc couramment admis que la signature \u201cSIMON FR\u201d renvoie \u00e0 Nicolas Simon, pour \u201cNicolas Simon Fr\u00e9binet\u201d. Lors de la vente du 2 juin 2022, la famille sera particuli\u00e8rement bien repr\u00e9sent\u00e9e puisque quatre instruments de Nicolas Simon seront pr\u00e9sent\u00e9s aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s des deux mod\u00e8les de Pierre Simon, parmi lesquels un int\u00e9ressant archet de violoncelle vers 1850, avec bouton post\u00e9rieur (lot 35) et un tr\u00e8s bel archet de violon mont\u00e9 argent (lot 335). Les archets de Nicolas Simon ont vite \u00e9t\u00e9 reconnus pour leur qualit\u00e9 et ont servi de mod\u00e8les \u00e0 un certain nombre d\u2019archetiers de Mirecourt, \u00e0 l\u2019instar de Charles Nicolas Bazin.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Pierre Simon, des d\u00e9buts \u00e0 Paris avec Peccatte<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Bien que Nicolas Simon soit un archetier au savoir-faire reconnu, Pierre Simon est consid\u00e9r\u00e9 comme le grand ma\u00eetre de la famille. Sa production, souvent de grande qualit\u00e9, est tr\u00e8s recherch\u00e9e par les musiciens professionnels et les fins connaisseurs. Apr\u00e8s un apprentissage aupr\u00e8s des luthiers de Mirecourt et une premi\u00e8re exp\u00e9rience, il quitte sa ville natale pour rejoindre Paris en 1838, \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e2ge de 30 ans. S\u2019entame alors une collaboration avec Dominique Peccatte qui, bien que relativement courte – elle ne durera que deux ans – marquera durablement son style. Chez Peccatte, il c\u00f4toie plusieurs autres archetiers, dont Joseph Henry, avec qui il s\u2019associera plus tard – nous y reviendrons.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Les diverses collaborations de Pierre Simon avec ses contemporains sont importantes pour comprendre son \u0153uvre et son style. En tr\u00e8s bon \u00e9tat et de grande qualit\u00e9, l\u2019archet de la vente du 2 juin 2022, r\u00e9alis\u00e9 vers 1845, donne un bel aper\u00e7u de la premi\u00e8re partie de sa carri\u00e8re. En effet, cet instrument est un remarquable t\u00e9moignage de l\u2019influence de Dominique Peccatte sur son travail, comme nous pouvons le percevoir dans le d\u00e9gorgement encore assez court et tr\u00e8s \u201cpeccattisant\u201d. Cet instrument est particuli\u00e8rement int\u00e9ressant car, comme le soulignent les experts en archets Sylvain Bigot et Yannick Le Canu, il \u00e9voque l\u2019influence de Peccatte tout en mettant en \u00e9vidence la singularit\u00e9 du style de Pierre Simon :<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

“Les archets en mod\u00e8le Peccatte, du type de ceux r\u00e9alis\u00e9s par Henry, Maline ou Maire, sont puissants et carr\u00e9s, alors que les archets de Simon sont toujours plus f\u00e9minins, plus ronds, notamment au niveau de ses mod\u00e8les de t\u00eate.”<\/p>Sylvain Bigot et Yannick Le Canu, experts en archets<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Par ailleurs, l\u2019estampille \u201cGAND, PARIS\u201d de ce mod\u00e8le offre \u00e9galement un t\u00e9moignage historique de la collaboration de Pierre Simon avec Charles Fran\u00e7ois GAND, pour qui il r\u00e9alisa des archets de bonne qualit\u00e9 et tr\u00e8s recherch\u00e9s. Enfin, nous ne pouvons occulter l\u2019influence perceptible de Vuillaume dans la conception de cet instrument, qui pr\u00e9sente notamment une t\u00eate d\u2019une grande puret\u00e9 et ronde sur l\u2019arri\u00e8re.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Une production marqu\u00e9e par son travail pour Vuillaume  <\/h1>\n\n\n\n

En effet, en 1840, Pierre Simon quitte l\u2019atelier de Peccatte pour d\u00e9buter une collaboration avec Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume qui prendra fin en 1844, peu de temps avant la r\u00e9alisation de l\u2019instrument de la vente du 2 juin 2022 estampill\u00e9 \u201cGAND, PARIS\u201d. Durant sa collaboration avec Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume, Pierre Simon r\u00e9alise de tr\u00e8s beaux mod\u00e8les, dont des archets \u00e0 m\u00e8ches interchangeables<\/a>. <\/strong>Tout comme sa collaboration avec Peccatte avait pu impr\u00e9gner son style, son travail pour Vuillaume le marquera profond\u00e9ment et ses instruments \u00e9voqueront longtemps la production du c\u00e9l\u00e8bre luthier-archetier. Cette longue influence de Vuillaume s\u2019explique en partie par le fait que Pierre Simon continua de travailler sur commande pour lui, m\u00eame apr\u00e8s s\u2019\u00eatre \u00e9tabli \u00e0 son compte en 1844.
Le deuxi\u00e8me archet de la vente Vichy Ench\u00e8res du 2 juin 2022 offre un beau t\u00e9moignage de cette proximit\u00e9 stylistique, puisque bien que r\u00e9alis\u00e9 vers 1850 – soit plusieurs ann\u00e9es apr\u00e8s avoir quitt\u00e9 l\u2019atelier de Vuillaume -, la production de Pierre Simon est encore empreinte du style et du travail de Vuillaume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCet archet est caract\u00e9ristique de la p\u00e9riode o\u00f9, inlassablement, il continuait de travailler pour Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume. Le d\u00e9gorgement est plus carr\u00e9, le chanfrein de t\u00eate est tr\u00e8s fin au niveau de la plaque de t\u00eate.\u201d<\/p>Sylvain Bigot et Yannick Le Canu, experts en archets<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

La coulisse de la hausse est assez ronde et \u00e9voque le mod\u00e8le Vuillaume. Toutefois, la t\u00eate semble d\u00e9j\u00e0 plus influenc\u00e9e par le style \u00e0 la mode dans les ann\u00e9es 1850, puisqu\u2019elle est arrondie sur le devant et creus\u00e9e sur l\u2019arri\u00e8re.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Collaboration avec Henry et vicissitudes : une vue in\u00e9dite de leur atelier<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

En 1847, Pierre Simon s\u2019accorde avec Dominique Peccatte pour r\u00e9cup\u00e9rer son atelier – ancienne propri\u00e9t\u00e9 de Fran\u00e7ois Lupot II – et d\u00e9bute une collaboration avec Joseph Henry qui devrait durer jusqu\u2019en 1851. S\u2019il est fr\u00e9quent de lire que cette collaboration \u00e9tait vou\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chec en raison de la forte personnalit\u00e9 de ces deux archetiers, c\u2019est oublier un facteur historique de taille : le percement de la rue de Rivoli. En effet, comme nous le rappellent les experts Sylvain Bigot et Yannick Le Canu, la fin de cette collaboration fut pr\u00e9cipit\u00e9e par la destruction de l\u2019atelier programm\u00e9e \u00e0 d\u00e9but 1852.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLe percement de la rue de Rivoli va faire dispara\u00eetre pr\u00e8s de 250 maisons, 80 seront d\u00e9molies au mois de janvier prochain\u201d.<\/p>\u201cLettre du Conservateur du Plan de Paris, Deschamps, Paris, le 17 novembre 1851\u201d, cit\u00e9e dans Pierre Pinon, Paris pour m\u00e9moire, Le livre noir des destructions haussmanniennes<\/em>, Parigramme, 2012<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Le percement de la rue fut dessin\u00e9 par Eug\u00e8ne Deschamps, conservateur du Plan de Paris, qui devint en 1854, \u00e0 l\u2019arriv\u00e9e d\u2019Haussmann, chef du bureau des Travaux d\u2019Architecture, puis responsable du service du Plan en 1856. Haussmann \u00e9crira d\u2019ailleurs dans ses M\u00e9moires <\/em>: \u201cLe Plan de Paris, c\u2019\u00e9tait M. Deschamps\u201d.[1]<\/sup><\/a> L\u2019architecte Gabriel Davioud fut, quant \u00e0 lui, charg\u00e9 de relever les fa\u00e7ades des maisons d\u00e9molies, ce qui nous permet aujourd\u2019hui de conserver une trace de l\u2019ancien atelier de Lupot r\u00e9cup\u00e9r\u00e9 par Peccatte, puis vendu \u00e0 Simon et Henry. Celui-ci se situait au 18 rue d’Angiviller, au nord de la Place du Louvre. D\u00e9clar\u00e9 d\u2019utilit\u00e9 publique, le percement de la rue de Rivoli contraignit ainsi Simon et Henry \u00e0 cesser leur collaboration rue d\u2019Angiviller et explique l\u2019installation de Pierre Simon au 179 rue Saint-Honor\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il est curieux de constater qu\u2019entre 1852 et 1878, notre archetier n’appara\u00eet plus dans l\u2019Almanach du Commerce<\/em> de Paris, mais que simultan\u00e9ment, un Simon est mentionn\u00e9 dans celui de Mirecourt. Faut-il comprendre que Pierre Simon avait regagn\u00e9 sa ville natale durant cette p\u00e9riode ou s\u2019agit-il d\u2019un autre archetier de la grande famille Simon ? Ce qui est s\u00fbr, c\u2019est qu\u2019on retrouve trace de lui \u00e0 Paris en 1878, au 232 rue Saint-Denis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Son grand savoir-faire et ses prestigieuses collaborations livr\u00e8rent parmi les instruments les plus aboutis de son si\u00e8cle, dont t\u00e9moignent les deux archets de la vente Vichy Ench\u00e8res du 2 juin 2022, caract\u00e9ristiques de sa production des ann\u00e9es 1845-1850. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

At our next fine stringed instruments auction, to be held on 2 June 2022 at Vichy Ench\u00e8res, the Simon family will be particularly well represented, with four bows by Nicolas Simon, aka Simon FR, and two by Pierre Simon \u2013 the only bow maker in the family to have left Mirecourt to move to Paris. These two particularly interesting bows, made around 1845 and 1850, reflect the Parisian collaborations of Pierre Simon and provide us with an opportunity to revisit the work and life of this increasingly sought-after master.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Pierre Simon (1808-1881) is the best known member of a large family of bow makers from Mirecourt, which is divided into two branches. The first includes Pierre Simon and his brother Barth\u00e9l\u00e9my Simon (1811-1884), who probably stamped his work with his wife’s family name \u201cPIERROT\u201d, as well as his nephew Dominique Jean-Baptiste Simon (1843-after 1856).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The second also includes two brothers, Jean Simon (1804-1863), his son Nicolas Simon (1835-1880), who stamped his work \u201cSIMON.N\u201d, and Nicolas Simon (1806-1864) \u2013 the only bow maker in the family to have signed his bows with the enigmatic \u201cSIMON FR\u201d stamp.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Amongst the theories put forward to explain this stamp, the most convincing is that \u201cFR\u201d refers to the first two letters of the maiden name of Nicolas Simon’s wife, Madeleine Fr\u00e9binet. At that time, it was indeed common for makers to use their wife\u2019s name to associate her with their activity or in order to distinguish themselves from colleagues (another well-known example is Dominique HENRY who stamped his bows \u201cHENRY.JV\u201d for JonVaux, the name of his wife). Another theory is that \u201cFR\u201d is the abbreviation of \u201cfreres\u201d (brothers), in reference to a possible collaboration between two brothers of the Simon family, but this seems unlikely given the absence of supporting evidence in historical documents.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

In addition, a collaboration between brothers Pierre and Barth\u00e9l\u00e9my Simon should be ruled out as Pierre left Mirecourt to work in Paris early on. It is therefore generally accepted that the stamp \u201cSIMON FR\u201d refers to Nicolas Simon, as in \u201cNicolas Simon Fr\u00e9binet\u201d. During the sale on 2 June 2022, the family will be particularly well represented since four bows by Nicolas Simon will be included, alongside the two bows by Pierre Simon: an interesting cello bow made around 1850, with a later button (lot 35), and a very fine silver mounted violin bow (lot 335). Nicolas Simon bows quickly gained recognition for their quality and served as models for a number of Mirecourt bow makers, such as Charles Nicolas Bazin.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Pierre Simon: his early career in Paris with Peccatte<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Although Nicolas Simon is a bow maker whose craftsmanship is widely recognized, it is Pierre Simon who is considered the greatest master of the family. His production, often of high quality, is highly sought after by professional musicians and fine connoisseurs. After training with makers in Mirecourt and a first work experience there, he left his hometown to go to Paris in 1838, at the age of 30. There he worked with Dominique Peccatte and, although this collaboration was relatively short \u2013 it only lasted two years, it left a lasting legacy on his style. At Peccatte\u2019s, he rubbed shoulders with several other bow makers, including Joseph Henry, with whom he collaborated later on \u2013 as we will discuss below.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Pierre Simon’s various collaborations with his contemporaries are important in understanding his work and his style. The bow in the sale of 2 June 2022, which is in very good condition and of high quality, was made around 1845 and is a typical example of his early work. Indeed, this bow is a remarkable testimony to the influence of Dominique Peccatte on his work, as can be observed in the still rather short and very Peccate-style hollowing of the throat. This bow is particularly interesting because, as pointed out by bow experts Sylvain Bigot and Yannick Le Canu, it shows the influence of Peccatte, whilst also attesting to the unique style of Pierre Simon:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

“Bows after Peccatte, such as those made by Henry, Maline or Maire, are usually powerful and square, whereas those by Simon are always more feminine and rounder, in particular with regards to the style of the head.”<\/p>Sylvain Bigot et Yannick Le Canu, experts en archets<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

In addition, the \u201cGAND, PARIS\u201d stamp on this example is a testimony to Pierre Simon’s collaboration with Charles Fran\u00e7ois GAND, for whom he made good quality and highly sought-after bows. Finally, the influence of Vuillaume is noticeable in the design of this bow, in particular that of the head, which is of great purity and round at the back.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

A production influenced by his collaboration with Vuillaume<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

In 1840, Pierre Simon left the workshop of Peccatte to start working with Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume; this collaboration ended in 1844, shortly before the bow stamped \u201cGAND, PARIS\u201d in the sale of 2 June 2022 was made. During his time with Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume, Pierre Simon produced very beautiful examples, including bows with interchangeable hair<\/a>. <\/strong>Just as his collaboration with Peccatte influenced his style, his work for Vuillaume left a lasting impression on the man and his bows, which were reminiscent of his production for the famous violin maker long after their collaboration ended. The lasting influence of Vuillaume is partly due to the fact that Pierre Simon continued to work on commissions for him, even after setting up on his own in 1844.
The second bow in the Vichy Ench\u00e8res sale on 2 June 2022 is a good example of the continued influence of Vuillaume on Pierre Simon\u2019s style: although it was made around 1850 – i.e. several years after he left the Vuillaume workshop \u2013 it shows Simon’s output was still marked by the style and work of Vuillaume<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis bow is characteristic of the period when he tirelessly continued to work for Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume. The throat is more square, the head chamfer is very narrow at the head plate.\u201d<\/p>Sylvain Bigot et Yannick Le Canu, experts en archets<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The bottom slide of the frog is quite round and reminiscent of the Vuillaume model. However, the head already seems more influenced by the style in fashion in the 1850s, since it is rounded at the front and hollowed out at the back.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Collaboration with Henry and change of circumstances: a reassessment of their workshop\u2019s fortune<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

In 1847, Pierre Simon agreed with Dominique Peccatte to take over the latter\u2019s workshop \u2013 which was formerly owned by Fran\u00e7ois Lupot II \u2013 and began a collaboration with Joseph Henry which lasted until 1851. The common view is that this collaboration was doomed to failure because of the strong personalities of these two bow makers, but this analysis overlooks one important historical element: the construction work for the opening of the rue de Rivoli. Indeed, as experts Sylvain Bigot and Yannick Le Canu point out, the end of this collaboration was forced by the demolishing of the workshop scheduled for early 1852.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new street was designed by Eug\u00e8ne Deschamps, curator of the City Plan for Paris, who became in 1854, upon the arrival of Haussmann, head of the Office of Architectural Works, and then head of the City Plan department in 1856. Moreover, Haussmann wrote in his memoirs: \u201cThe Plan of Paris was M. Deschamps\u2019s\u201d.[1]<\/sup><\/a> The architect Gabriel Davioud was responsible for making records of the facades of the houses to be demolished, which allows us today to retrace the history of the former workshop of Lupot, first taken over by Peccatte, and then by Simon and Henry. It was situated at 18 rue d’Angiviller, north of the Place du Louvre. The construction of the rue de Rivoli was declared in the public interest and therefore it forced Simon and Henry to cease their collaboration rue d’Angiviller and explains the move of Pierre Simon to 179 rue Saint-Honor\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is interesting to note that, between 1852 and 1878, our bow maker no longer appeared in the Directory of Commerce of Paris, but that, meanwhile, a Simon was included in that of Mirecourt. Should we deduce from this that Pierre Simon returned to his hometown during this period, or does this entry just refer to another bow maker from the large Simon family? What is certain is that we find him again in Paris in 1878, at 232 rue Saint-Denis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pierre Simon left an important legacy in bow making, and his bows are much sought after by collectors and professional musicians around the world. His great craftsmanship and his collaborations with prestigious makers helped produce some of the most accomplished bows of his century, as evidenced by the two bows in the Vichy Ench\u00e8res sale of 2 June 2022, which are typical of his work in the period 1845-1850. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
