La vente d\u2019instruments \u00e0 vent et \u00e0 cordes pinc\u00e9es du samedi 5 novembre 2022 nous donne l\u2019occasion de nous replonger dans l\u2019histoire de la cabrette au sein de la communaut\u00e9 auvergnate de Paris aux XIX\u00e8me<\/sup> et XX\u00e8me<\/sup> si\u00e8cles, ainsi que de revenir sur le r\u00f4le majeur des fr\u00e8res Marginier et de l\u2019association Cabrettes et Cabretta\u00efres dans le renouveau de l\u2019instrument apr\u00e8s la Seconde Guerre mondiale.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

La cabrette et la communaut\u00e9 auvergnate de Paris<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

La cabrette, \u00e0 laquelle on donne le nom de musette par extension, est un instrument \u00e0 vent de musique traditionnelle auvergnat de la famille des cornemuses \u00e0 anche double. Compos\u00e9e d\u2019un sac de cuir de ch\u00e8vre duquel elle tire son nom (ch\u00e8vre se disant cabre <\/em>en occitan), d\u2019un hautbois et d\u2019un bourdon, la cabrette a la facult\u00e9 de pouvoir changer de tonalit\u00e9 en modifiant simplement le pied. Sa forme actuelle est n\u00e9e \u00e0 Paris, issue de musettes savantes, et adopt\u00e9e par les auvergnats immigr\u00e9s dans la capitale principalement \u00e0 partir de 1850, suite \u00e0 la crise agricole. \u00c0 partir de la fin du Second Empire, ces Auvergnats se firent conna\u00eetre par leurs brasseries \u201cvins et charbon\u201d, dans lesquelles ils vendaient aussi bien de l\u2019alcool que du combustible ! Cette sp\u00e9cificit\u00e9 leur valut le surnom de \u201cbougnats\u201d (par contraction des mots \u201ccharbonnier\u201d et \u201cauvergnat\u201d), \u00e9galement donn\u00e9 \u00e0 leurs caf\u00e9s-charbons par m\u00e9tonymie.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Ces \u00e9tablissements \u00e9taient install\u00e9s dans le 11e<\/sup> arrondissement de Paris et principalement rue de Lappe. Rapidement, ils devinrent le lieu de rendez-vous des \u00e9migr\u00e9s auvergnats venant s\u2019y divertir et danser au son de la cabrette import\u00e9e d\u2019Auvergne. C\u2019est dans ce contexte que la cabrette \u00e0 soufflet apparut pour rythmer les nuits des Auvergnats de Paris. Elle fut tr\u00e8s populaire de la fin du XIX\u00e8me<\/sup> si\u00e8cle au d\u00e9but du XX\u00e8me<\/sup> si\u00e8cle, avant d\u2019\u00eatre supplant\u00e9e par l\u2019accord\u00e9on. De 1880 aux ann\u00e9es 1930, fleurirent ainsi une vingtaine de bals rue de Lappe, dont le Bal Chambon, le Balajo, ou le Bal Bouscatel – du nom du joueur de cabrette Antoine Bouscatel. La rencontre de ce dernier en 1904 avec l\u2019accord\u00e9oniste et fils d\u2019italien, Charles P\u00e9guri, appara\u00eet comme le symbole de l’av\u00e8nement du style musette et de l\u2019association cabrette-accord\u00e9on.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

L\u2019instrument et la musique traditionnelle auvergnate tomb\u00e8rent en d\u00e9liquescence dans les ann\u00e9es 1940-1950. Mod\u00e8les, fabricants et professeurs de cabrettes\u2026 Tous semblaient avoir disparu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEn 1943, Joseph Lagaly est le seul Cabretta\u00efre qui accepte d\u2019enseigner la Cabrette […] \u00e0 quelques apprentis comme : Jacques Berthier, Georges Soule, Maurice Pradeyro, et quelquefois Marcel Marginier. […] La Cabrette est dans l\u2019impasse, c\u2019est le d\u00e9clin\u2026 Pour la sortir de l\u2019orni\u00e8re dans laquelle elle est tomb\u00e9e, Jacques Berthier \u00e0 l\u2019id\u00e9e de cr\u00e9er une amicale de Cabretta\u00efres.\u201d<\/p>http:\/\/www.cabrettesetcabrettaires.com\/Histoire\/Histoire.htm<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Marcel Marginier fit partie des premiers membres et participa \u00e0 la premi\u00e8re r\u00e9union qui vit l\u2019arriv\u00e9e de nouvelles personnalit\u00e9s d\u00e9sireuses d\u2019apprendre \u00e0 jouer de la cabrette. C\u2019est seulement le 23 avril 1956 que l\u2019association Cabrettes et Cabretta\u00efres<\/em> fut cr\u00e9\u00e9e, avec Jacques Berthier pour pr\u00e9sident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLeur dessein commun est d’\u0153uvrer pour la sauvegarde et l\u2019illustration de notre pr\u00e9cieux patrimoine instrumental, former de jeunes musiciens et relancer la fabrication de la Cabrette.\u201d<\/p>http:\/\/www.cabrettesetcabrettaires.com\/Histoire\/Histoire.htm<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

L\u2019association installa son si\u00e8ge social au bistrot \u201cLa Galoche d\u2019Aurillac\u201d, 41 rue de Lappe, \u00e9galement si\u00e8ge de l\u2019\u00e9cole de Cabrette sous la direction de Georges Soule. L\u2019endroit devint rapidement l\u2019antre de la colonie et de la musique auvergnate \u00e0 Paris. Concours, stages, rassemblements, concerts, publications, tout fut mis en \u0153uvre pour faire rena\u00eetre l’instrument. L\u2019association se structura rapidement et les diff\u00e9rents membres trouv\u00e8rent leur place et leurs missions, notamment en ce qui concerne la fabrication des cabrettes. Fran\u00e7ois Hugon r\u00e9alisa les sacs et soufflets, Ren\u00e9 Rouquet les pieds et les anches, et bien s\u00fbr Marcel et ses fr\u00e8res Albert et Jean Marginier, qui apr\u00e8s une dizaine d\u2019ann\u00e9es de per\u00e7ages de pieds dont un bon nombre fut \u00e0 jeter avant de trouver le mod\u00e8le id\u00e9als, fabriqu\u00e8rent des cabrettes ayant beaucoup de r\u00e9percussions sur le jeu\u2026 Marcel Marginier fut pr\u00e9sident de l\u2019association de 1979 \u00e0 1984. Il perfectionna sa pratique de la cabrette aupr\u00e8s du grand musicien Martin Cayla – \u00e9galement \u00e9diteur de musique auvergnate et propri\u00e9taire de la plus importante boutique parisienne de musique de l\u2019\u00e9poque<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

La cabrette Marginier<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

La cabrette traditionnelle \u00e9tant un instrument \u00e0 gamme non temp\u00e9r\u00e9e (les \u00e9carts entre les notes sont variables), son jeu ne se pr\u00eatait gu\u00e8re aux airs lents des valses et des romances \u00e0 pr\u00e9sent en vogue dans les bals musettes. Le probl\u00e8me ne se posait pas pour la musique rapide des danses comme la polka, la bourr\u00e9e ou encore la mazurka, qui permettaient aux virtuoses de maquiller les notes avec beaucoup d\u2019ornementations. En revanche, pour les airs modernes, il valait mieux – selon un certain nombre de musiciens – ajuster la gamme et donner \u00e0 la cabrette la capacit\u00e9 de jouer comme un instrument dit temp\u00e9r\u00e9 (dont les intervalles sont \u00e9gaux). Au cours de leurs recherches, les Marginier s’aper\u00e7urent qu\u2019il \u00e9tait possible d\u2019obtenir ce r\u00e9sultat en jouant sur un pied ancien r\u00e9alis\u00e9 par le c\u00e9l\u00e8bre fabricant Alias (1855-1911?), \u00e0 condition d’ex\u00e9cuter un doigt\u00e9 sp\u00e9cifique permettant d\u2019obtenir une tierce majeure juste. Jusque-l\u00e0, avec le doigt\u00e9 traditionnel de la cabrette, le Mi sonnait en effet entre la tierce mineure et majeure. Ils ont donc adopt\u00e9 ce doigt\u00e9 et fabriqu\u00e9 des cabrettes avec un pied d\u00e9rivant du mod\u00e8le Alias en leur possession.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Les instruments qu\u2019ils fabriqu\u00e8rent permirent ainsi \u00e0 toute une g\u00e9n\u00e9ration de cabrettaires de jouer un nouveau r\u00e9pertoire \u00e0 l\u2019esth\u00e9tique diff\u00e9rente, avec un pied moelleux dans le son qui se mariait mieux avec l\u2019accord\u00e9on chromatique et le jeu des bals musettes. Cette innovation donna \u00e0 l\u2019instrument la possibilit\u00e9 de jouer dans des ensembles avec une gamme moderne. En fonction de l\u2019esth\u00e9tique recherch\u00e9e, la cabrette et le doigt\u00e9 Marginier \u00e9taient donc pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9s des musiciens. Marcel l\u2019utilisa lui-m\u00eame sur plusieurs enregistrements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La recherche de somptuosit\u00e9 <\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Les instruments des Marginier faisaient l\u2019objet d\u2019un soin et d\u2019un raffinement particulier, que ce soit dans le choix des mat\u00e9riaux ou dans la sculpture des t\u00eates. Pour la r\u00e9alisation de ces derni\u00e8res, les Marginier faisaient appel \u00e0 des artisans sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9s. Le mod\u00e8le de la vente du 5 novembre 2022 offre un bel exemple de la somptuosit\u00e9 que pouvaient atteindre les cabrettes Marginier. La bague du bo\u00eetier est en or incrust\u00e9 d\u2019un diamant et la poche en cuir est recouverte d\u2019une \u00e9l\u00e9gante robe de velours rouge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La t\u00eate est sculpt\u00e9e d\u2019une all\u00e9gorie de la Nation au casque ail\u00e9, surmont\u00e9 d\u2019un coq qui rappelle le buste de Gratianopolis<\/em>, personnification de la ville de Grenoble, sculpt\u00e9e par Henri Ding en 1884 (mus\u00e9e de Grenoble). Elle a \u00e9galement beaucoup en commun avec le bas-relief d’\u00c9mile Soldi \u00e0 l\u2019effigie de Gallia<\/em>, r\u00e9alis\u00e9 en 1873 et conserv\u00e9 au mus\u00e9e d\u2019Orsay. Marcel Marginier avait un go\u00fbt prononc\u00e9 pour les belles pi\u00e8ces ouvrag\u00e9es, comme en t\u00e9moigne une t\u00eate de cabrette de sa collection en forme de f\u00e9lin (vente du 5 novembre 2022, Vichy Ench\u00e8res).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Tr\u00e8s raffin\u00e9e, cette cabrette pr\u00e9sente \u00e9galement un soufflet sculpt\u00e9 en bois et cuir rouge recouvert des armes d’argent \u00e0 deux bandes de sable, port\u00e9es par la famille Des Autheux, la commune d’Autheux (Somme) ou encore par les seigneurs de la Tousche (\u00e0 Ambri\u00e8res, Montigny, de la Gasselini\u00e8re et de la Blosserie, du Parc, de l’Isle, \u00e0 Saint-Paul-le-Vicomte, du Coudray, des Ruaux, au Maine)[1]<\/sup><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c0 l\u2019image de ce mod\u00e8le, les cabrettes Marginier devinrent ainsi des objets de prestige con\u00e7us comme de v\u00e9ritables \u0153uvres d\u2019art, offertes \u00e0 l\u2019occasion de grands \u00e9v\u00e9nements ou command\u00e9es par des musiciens revendiquant un certain statut social.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L’association Cabrettes et Cabrettaires<\/em> joua ainsi un grand r\u00f4le dans le d\u00e9veloppement des particularismes musicaux auvergnats gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 des figures comme les fr\u00e8res Marginier. Ces derniers compt\u00e8rent parmi les membres les plus importants de l\u2019association et firent partie des plus fameux facteurs du XX\u00e8me si\u00e8cle. Les trois fr\u00e8res, Jean, Albert et Marcel, fabriqu\u00e8rent des cabrettes. Jean r\u00e9alisait les soufflets et poches en cuir, Albert s\u2019occupait essentiellement des pieds, tandis que Marcel travaillait davantage sur les anches. Pendant pr\u00e8s de dix ans, ce dernier qui n\u2019\u00e9tait pas facteur de profession, passa ses week-ends et soir\u00e9es \u00e0 exp\u00e9rimenter de nouveaux per\u00e7ages avant de parvenir \u00e0 trouver les tons et demi-tons justes. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMarcel et Albert qui, depuis 1957, effectuent de nombreuses \u00e9tudes et relev\u00e9s, produisent leur premier pied en 1962. La qualit\u00e9 de fabrication, la justesse et la sonorit\u00e9 de leurs pieds, en font encore aujourd\u2019hui l\u2019un des facteurs les plus fameux.\u201d<\/p>http:\/\/www.cabrettesetcabrettaires.com\/Histoire\/Histoire.htm<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

En outre, il n\u2019h\u00e9sita pas \u00e0 consacrer une grande partie de son temps \u00e0 la r\u00e9paration des hanches des musiciens venant le solliciter rue de Lappe. Les instruments des fr\u00e8res Marginier \u00e9taient enti\u00e8rement r\u00e9alis\u00e9s \u00e0 la main et sont encore aujourd\u2019hui un gage d\u2019excellence pour les amateurs de ce type de cabrettes. En 1976, les trois fr\u00e8res travaill\u00e8rent nuit et jour pendant une semaine afin d\u2019offrir une cabrette au Pr\u00e9sident de la R\u00e9publique Val\u00e9ry Giscard d\u2019Estaing \u00e0 l\u2019occasion de son cinquanti\u00e8me anniversaire.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The cabrette and the Auvergne community of Paris<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

The cabrette, which is often called musette by extension, is a wind instrument from the double reed bagpipes family of musical instruments, used in the traditional music of the region of Auvergne in France. It is made up of a goat leather bag, from which it takes its name (goat is called cabre in Occitan language), an oboe and a drone, and its tone can be altered by simply modifying the foot. Its current form was born in Paris, originating from scholarly musettes, and adopted by the people of Auvergne who immigrated to the capital mainly from 1850 onwards, following the agricultural crisis. From the end of the Second Empire, these Auvergnats became known for their \u201cwine and coal\u201d breweries, in which they sold both alcohol and fuel! This earned them the nickname of \u201cbougnats\u201d (a contraction of the words \u201ccharbonnier\u201d and \u201cauvergnat\u201d), a name also given to their caf\u00e9s-charbons by extension.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

These establishments were located in the 11th arrondissement of Paris and mainly rue de Lappe. They quickly became meeting places for migrants from Auvergne who wanted to have fun and dance to the sound of the cabrette from Auvergne. It is in this context, to enliven the nights of the Auvergnats of Paris, that the cabrette with a bellows made its first appearance. It was very popular from the late 19th century to the early 20th century, before it was superseded by the accordion. From 1880 to the 1930s, around twenty balls flourished on rue de Lappe, including the Bal Chambon, Balajo, and Bal Bouscatel \u2013 named after cabrette player Antoine Bouscatel. His encounter in 1904 with the accordionist of Italian descent Charles Peguri gave rise to the bal musette and the association between the cabrette and the accordion.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

This instrument and the traditional music of Auvergne fell into oblivion in the 1940s and 1950s. Instruments, manufacturers and teachers all but seemed to have disappeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn 1943, Joseph Lagaly was the only Cabretta\u00efre who accepted to teach the Cabrette [\u2026] to a few pupils, including Jacques Berthier, Georges Soule, Maurice Pradeyro, and occasionally Marcel Marginier. [\u2026] The Cabrette was at a dead end, in decline\u2026 To bring it back to life, Jacques Berthier had the idea of creating a Cabretta\u00efres association.\u201d<\/p>http:\/\/www.cabrettesetcabrettaires.com\/Histoire\/Histoire.htm<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Marcel Marginier was one of the founding members, and he took part in the first meeting in which a number of individuals wishing to learn to play the cabrette joined. It was only on 23 April 1956 that the Cabrettes et Cabretta\u00efres association was officially founded, with Jacques Berthier as its president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The association set up its head office at the bistro \u201cLa Galoche d\u2019Aurillac\u201d, 41 rue de Lappe, which was also the head office of the Cabrette school under the direction of Georges Soule. The place quickly became the lair of the expatriate community of Auvergne and of its music in Paris. Everything was done to revive the instrument: competitions, courses, gatherings, concerts, publications\u2026 The association\u2019s structure was quickly put in place and, within it, the various members found their place and their missions, in particular with regard to the manufacture of cabrettes. Fran\u00e7ois Hugon made the bags and bellows, Ren\u00e9 Rouquet the feet and the reeds, and of course Marcel Marginier and his brothers Albert and Jean Marginier, who after ten years of drilling feet, many of which had to be discarded before finding the ideal model, made cabrettes that had a major impact on its playing. Marcel Marginier was president of the association from 1979 to 1984. He perfected his practice of the cabrette with the great musician Martin Cayla – also a publisher of Auvergne music and owner of the most important Parisian music shop of the time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Marginier cabrette<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

The traditional cabrette being an instrument with an untempered scale (in which the intervals between the notes are not equal), its playing did not lend itself to the slow airs of the waltzes and romances in vogue in the bals musettes at the time. This was less of an issue for the fast tempo dance music such as the polka, the bourr\u00e9e or the mazurka, in which virtuosos would hide the problem notes behind a lot of ornamentation. On the other hand, for modern tunes, it was better \u2013 according to a number of musicians \u2013 to adjust the scale and give the cabrette the ability to play like a so-called tempered instrument (whose intervals are equal). In the course of their research, the Marginiers realized that it was possible to achieve this by using an old foot made by the famous maker Alias (1855-1911?), provided you used a particular fingering to obtain a major third in tune. Until then, with the traditional fingering of the cabrette, the E was half way between the minor and major third. They adopted this fingering and made cabrettes with a foot derived from the Alias example in their possession.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

As a result, their instruments allowed a whole generation of cabrettaires to play a new repertoire of a different style, with a soft sounding foot that blended better with the chromatic accordion and was better suited to the bals musettes. This innovation also gave the instrument the ability to play in ensembles with a modern scale. Depending on the desired effect, the cabrette with Marginier fingering was therefore the preferred choice of musicians. Marcel used it himself on several recordings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The instruments of the Marginiers are finely crafted, and care has been given to all its components, whether in the choice of materials or the carving of the heads. For the latter, the Marginiers called upon specialized craftsmen. The example in the 5 November 2022 sale offers a fine example of how sumptuous Marginier cabrettes could be. The case ring is in gold encrusted with a diamond and the leather pocket is covered with an elegant red velvet robe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The head carving represents an allegory of the Nation with a winged helmet, surmounted by a rooster, which recalls the bust of Gratianopolis, the personification of the city of Grenoble, sculpted by Henri Ding in 1884 (and kept in the museum of Grenoble). It also has a lot in common with \u00c9mile Soldi’s bas-relief of Gallia, made in 1873 and kept at the Mus\u00e9e d’Orsay. Marcel Marginier had a pronounced taste for beautiful ornate pieces, as illustrated by a cabrette head in the shape of a feline, from his collection (Vichy Ench\u00e8res sale of 5 November 2022).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

This very fine cabrette also has a bellows in carved wood and red leather with a representation of the coat of arms, in silver with two bands of sand, worn by the Des Autheux family, of the commune of Autheux (in the Somme region) and by the lords of Tousche (of Ambri\u00e8res, Montigny, la Gasselini\u00e8re and la Blosserie, le Parc, l’Isle, in Saint-Paul-le-Vicomte, le Coudray, les Ruaux, in the Maine province)[1]<\/sup><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As illustrated by this example, Marginier cabrettes became prestigious objects conceived as true works of art, presented on the occasion of major events or commissioned by musicians as social status symbols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Cabrettes et Cabrettaires association therefore played a major role in the development of the musical specificity of Auvergne thanks to individuals such as the Marginier brothers. They were amongst the most important members of the association and most famous makers of the 20th century. All three brothers, Jean, Albert and Marcel, made cabrettes. Jean made the gussets and leather pockets, Albert mainly focused on the feet, while Marcel worked more on the reeds. For almost ten years, the latter, who was not a luthier by profession, spent his weekends and evenings experimenting with new piercings before managing to find the right tones and half-tones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMarcel and Albert, who, since 1957, had carried out extensive research and surveys, produced their first foot in 1962. The quality of the craftsmanship, as well as the accuracy of tone and the sound of their feet, still places them amongst the most famous makers today.\u201d<\/p>http:\/\/www.cabrettesetcabrettaires.com\/Histoire\/Histoire.htm<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Moreover, he did not hesitate to devote a large part of his time to repairing the hips of musicians who came to him on the rue de Lappe. The instruments of the Marginier brothers were entirely made by hand and are still today a guarantee of excellence for enthusiasts of this type of cabrette. In 1976, the three brothers worked day and night for a week to offer a cabrette to the President of France, Val\u00e9ry Giscard d’Estaing, on the occasion of his 50th<\/sup> birthday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
