Cette derni\u00e8re porte l\u2019\u00e9tiquette de l\u2019atelier de Semley, sur laquelle le c\u00e9l\u00e8bre luthier a ajout\u00e9, \u00e0 la main et \u00e0 l\u2019encre : sa signature, la date de r\u00e9alisation de la guitare de 1984, son num\u00e9ro 622 et sa d\u00e9nomination : \u201cLa Violeta\u201d. Les instruments de Romanillos sont extr\u00eamement rares sur le march\u00e9, et encore plus rares sont ceux que l\u2019on retrouve dans les salles de ventes. Pour preuve, cette guitare est, \u00e0 notre connaissance, la premi\u00e8re \u00e0 \u00eatre propos\u00e9e aux ench\u00e8res depuis 20 ans. Tr\u00e8s t\u00f4t, il montre un int\u00e9r\u00eat pour le travail du bois et, \u00e0 l&#8217;\u00e2ge de 13 ans, commence un apprentissage en tant qu&#8217;\u00e9b\u00e9niste dans un atelier de fabrication de meubles \u00e0 Madrid. En 1956, alors \u00e2g\u00e9 de 24 ans, Romanillos \u00e9migre en Angleterre. Trois ans plus tard, en 1959, il \u00e9pouse Marian Harris, avec qui il aura trois fils : Jos\u00e9 Luis, Ignacio et Liam. Bien que son amour pour son pays ne l&#8217;ait jamais quitt\u00e9, c&#8217;est en Angleterre que Romanillos commence \u00e0 s\u2019int\u00e9resser \u00e0 la lutherie et, en 1961, il fabrique sa premi\u00e8re guitare pour apprendre \u00e0 jouer du flamenco. Il construit cet instrument avec les moyens du bord, utilisant un livre d&#8217;A.P. Sharpe, intitul\u00e9 <em>Make Your Own Spanish Guitar<\/em>, comme seul guide<a id=\"_ftnref1\" href=\"#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Il baptise cette premi\u00e8re cr\u00e9ation &#8220;Toribia&#8221;, en hommage \u00e0 sa m\u00e8re. En l\u2019entendant sonner, il d\u00e9cide de se consacrer pleinement \u00e0 la lutherie. Impressionn\u00e9 par le travail de Romanillos, Bream lui propose de venir installer son atelier dans une \u00e9table am\u00e9nag\u00e9e de sa propri\u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e0 Semley, dans le Wiltshire &#8211; une localisation qui appara\u00eet sur l\u2019\u00e9tiquette de la guitare de la vente du 9 novembre 2024. C&#8217;est dans cet atelier que Romanillos r\u00e9alise ses premi\u00e8res guitares en tant que luthier professionnel. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Leur collaboration culmine en 1973 avec la fabrication d&#8217;une guitare qui accompagnera Bream pendant de nombreuses ann\u00e9es, tant dans ses concerts que dans ses enregistrements<a id=\"_ftnref1\" href=\"#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a>. Romanillos a \u00e9tudi\u00e9 minutieusement les guitares de Torres, adoptant certaines techniques, tout en y apportant ses propres innovations. Comme Torres, Romanillos croyait en l&#8217;importance de l&#8217;\u00e9quilibre parfait entre l\u00e9g\u00e8ret\u00e9 et solidit\u00e9 dans la construction de ses instruments. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Cet \u00e9quilibre est en effet essentiel pour maximiser la r\u00e9sonance et la projection du son,- des caract\u00e9ristiques sonores propres aux guitares de Romanillos. Pour le dos et les \u00e9clisses, il privil\u00e9giait le palissandre, notamment celui de Rio, r\u00e9put\u00e9 pour sa densit\u00e9 et sa capacit\u00e9 \u00e0 produire des sonorit\u00e9s profondes et chaleureuses. Chaque d\u00e9tail est soigneusement pens\u00e9 et ex\u00e9cut\u00e9 avec une pr\u00e9cision in\u00e9gal\u00e9e. La rosace de la guitare de la vente du 9 novembre 2024, \u00e9l\u00e9ment distinctif de l&#8217;instrument, est un parfait exemple du savoir-faire de Romanillos et constitue, en un sens, sa signature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inspir\u00e9 par les motifs mauresques traditionnels, il cr\u00e9ait chaque rosace \u00e0 la main, en utilisant des incrustations de bois color\u00e9 et de nacre pour former des motifs g\u00e9om\u00e9triques complexes. Les motifs et les couleurs composant la rosace de la guitare de la vente Vichy Ench\u00e8res sont une parfaite illustration de l\u2019inspiration que le luthier puisait dans l\u2019observation de la cath\u00e9drale de Cordoue, et particuli\u00e8rement de ses s\u00e9ries d\u2019arcs outrepass\u00e9s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Les filets, bordures et autres d\u00e9tails ornementaux sont r\u00e9alis\u00e9s avec la m\u00eame attention minutieuse. Romanillos aimait utiliser des bois exotiques et des techniques de marqueterie sophistiqu\u00e9es pour ajouter une touche de raffinement \u00e0 ses instruments. l\u2019h\u00e9ritage de la lutherie espagnole, Romanillos \u00e9tudia les grands ma\u00eetres et constitua une impressionnante collection d\u2019instruments, mais aussi d\u2019archives. Avec sa femme, il est \u00e0 l\u2019origine de la cr\u00e9ation du mus\u00e9e de la guitare espagnole, \u00e0 Sig\u00fcenza, dans la <em>Casa del Doncel <\/em>(Guadalajara, Espagne). Le mus\u00e9e conserve une partie de la collection de musique de Romanillos, couvrant cinq si\u00e8cles de lutherie et comprenant des vihuelas et guitares, dont une Torres de 1865 proche de la FE21Y pr\u00e9sent\u00e9e dans la m\u00eame vente que ce mod\u00e8le de Romanillos. Le mus\u00e9e reconstitue \u00e9galement l\u2019atelier de Santos Hern\u00e1ndez, contrema\u00eetre de l&#8217;atelier de Manuel Ram\u00edrez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Romanillos \u00e9tait aussi un p\u00e9dagogue passionn\u00e9, qui anima de nombreux ateliers, s\u00e9minaires et cours, toujours ravi de partager ses connaissances et son expertise avec des luthiers et musiciens du monde entier. Il livrait en effet volontiers ses connaissances \u00e0 d&#8217;autres luthiers, enseignant et inspirant une nouvelle g\u00e9n\u00e9ration de professionnels au cours d\u2019ateliers et de conf\u00e9rences. The latter bears the label of the Semley workshop, on which the famous maker inscribed, by hand and in ink, his signature, the year it was made, 1984, its number, 622, and its name, \u201cLa Violeta\u201d. Romanillos\u2019s instruments are extremely rare on the market, and even rarer are those found in auction rooms. Indeed, to our knowledge, this guitar is the first to be presented at auction in 20 years. He showed an interest in woodworking from an early age and, aged 13, began an apprenticeship as a cabinetmaker in a furniture workshop in Madrid. In 1956, aged 24, Romanillos moved to England. Three years later, in 1959, he married Marian Harris, with whom he had three sons: Jos\u00e9 Luis, Ignacio and Liam. Although his love for his country never left him, it was in England that Romanillos began to take an interest in guitar making and, in 1961, he made his first guitar so he could learn to play flamenco. He built this instrument with what he had at hand, and with the sole guidance of the instruction manual Make Your Own Spanish Guitar, by A.P. Sharpe<a id=\"_ftnref1\" href=\"#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He named this first creation \u201cToribia\u201d, in homage to his mother. After hearing its sound, he decided to devote himself fully to guitar making. Bream was impressed by Romanillos\u2019s work and offered him the chance to set up his workshop in a converted stable on his property in Semley, Wiltshire \u2013 the location that features on the label of the guitar in the sale of 9 November 2024. It was in this workshop that Romanillos made his first guitars as a professional maker.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Their collaboration culminated in 1973 with the creation of a guitar that would accompany Bream for many years, and that he used for both concerts and recordings<a id=\"_ftnref1\" href=\"#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a>. Every detail has been carefully thought out and executed with unparalleled precision. The rosette on the guitar in the sale of 9 November 2024, which is a distinctive feature of the instrument, is a perfect example of Romanillos\u2019s craftsmanship and, in a sense, his trademark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inspired by traditional Moorish motifs, he created each rosette by hand, using coloured wood and mother-of-pearl inlays to form intricate geometric patterns. The patterns and colours composing the rosette on the guitar in the Vichy Ench\u00e8res sale are a perfect illustration of the inspiration the maker drew from observing the Cathedral of Cordoba, and particularly its series of horseshoe arches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The purfling, borders and other ornamental details are executed with the same meticulous attention to detail. Romanillos was very fond of exotic woods and sophisticated inlaying techniques to add a touch of refinement to his guitars. Romanillos\u2019s research not only deepened our understanding of Torres\u2019s work, but also helped elevate guitar making to a new level of academic and artistic recognition. His research was motivated by a deep respect for Torres and a desire to preserve and pass on this legacy to future generations of makers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1987, Jos\u00e9 Luis Romanillos and his wife, Marian Harris Winspear, published the seminal work <em>Antonio de Torres, Guitar Maker \u2013 His Life and Work<\/em>. This book, the result of many years of research and interviews, offers an insight into the life and work of the great master from Almer\u00eda. To this day, this work is the reference publication on Antonio de Torres, and, with it, Romanillos became the world\u2019s leading expert on Torres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to provide the most accurate depiction of the maker for this book, Romanillos conducted meticulous research into historical archives, studied the instruments and collected testimonies. This book has helped to dispel many preconceived notions about Torres and to better understand the impact of his innovations on the modern guitar. Together with his wife, he has created a detailed catalogue of Torres\u2019s instruments, providing precise descriptions, photographs and technical analyses. By carefully documenting construction techniques and placing them in their historical and cultural context, he provided a better understanding of the evolution of the classical guitar in Spain. His work has inspired many makers and researchers to further their studies of the history of the guitar, encouraging them to adopt a more scientific and rigorous legacy of Spanish guitar making, which led him to study the great masters and build up an impressive collection of instruments, but also of historical documents. Together with his wife, he contributed to the creation of the Spanish Guitar Museum, in Sig\u00fcenza, in the <em>Casa del Doncel<\/em> (Guadalajara, Spain). The museum preserves part of Romanillos&#8217;s instrument collection, spanning five centuries of guitar making, and which includes vihuelas and guitars, most notably an 1865 Torres guitar similar to the FE21Y presented in the same sale as this Romanillos example. The museum also features a reconstruction of the workshop of Santos Hern\u00e1ndez, the workshop assistant of Manuel Ram\u00edrez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Romanillos was also a passionate teacher, who led many workshops, seminars and courses, always keen to share his knowledge and expertise with makers and musicians from all over the world. Through workshops and conferences, he taught and inspired a new generation of guitar makers. As he used to say: \u201cI have no secrets, I tell everything I know.\u201d<a id=\"_ftnref1\" href=\"#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2002, he co-founded the <em>European Guitar Makers Association<\/em>, an organization whose aim is the promotion and preservation of guitar making.
