Parmi les nombreux noms qui illuminent la lutherie fran\u00e7aise au 19\u00e8me<\/sup> si\u00e8cle, deux se d\u00e9tachent particuli\u00e8rement : GAND et BERNARDEL. Ces deux familles ont donn\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019art fran\u00e7ais, pour la fabrication d\u2019instruments \u00e0 cordes frott\u00e9es, de magnifiques repr\u00e9sentants de tout premier ordre. Nous nous int\u00e9resserons particuli\u00e8rement aujourd\u2019hui \u00e0 l\u2019atelier \u00ab GAND & BERNARDEL \u00bb luthiers mis \u00e0 l’honneur lors des prochaines ventes de lutherie de Vichy (4, 5 et 6 juin 2013) et dont vous pouvez ici d\u00e9couvrir les instruments…   <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

GAND p\u00e8re et BERNARDEL p\u00e8re<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Petit retour en arri\u00e8re tout d\u2019abord. Charles Fran\u00e7ois GAND dit \u00ab GAND p\u00e8re \u00bb et Auguste S\u00e9bastien BERNARDEL dit \u00ab BERNARDEL p\u00e8re \u00bb sont deux luthiers n\u00e9s respectivement en 1787 et 1798. Ils ont en commun d\u2019avoir tout deux travaill\u00e9 chez \u00ab le Stradivarius fran\u00e7ais \u00bb, l\u2019illustre Nicolas LUPOT. Charles Fran\u00e7ois GAND devint m\u00eame le gendre de ce dernier avant de prendre la succession du vieux ma\u00eetre en 1824. Auguste S\u00e9bastien travailla quant \u00e0 lui plusieurs ann\u00e9es dont deux  sous la direction de Charles Fran\u00e7ois GAND  apr\u00e8s la mort de Nicolas LUPOT dans le c\u00e9l\u00e8bre atelier de la rue Croix des Petits Champs. Il s\u2019installa \u00e0 son propre compte \u00e0 Paris en 1826.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

A la mort de Charles Fran\u00e7ois GAND, ses deux fils, Charles Adolphe et Charles Nicolas Eug\u00e8ne -luthiers \u00e9galement- prennent la succession de leur p\u00e8re. En 1855, ils  modifient la raison sociale de l\u2019atelier. L\u2019appellation devient officiellement \u00ab GAND Fr\u00e8res \u00bb. Cette association durera jusqu\u2019en 1866 date \u00e0 laquelle Charles Adolphe meurt.
Du c\u00f4t\u00e9 de la famille BERNARDEL, Gustave Adolphe et Ernest Auguste -tout deux fils d\u2019Auguste S\u00e9bastien- travaillent dans l\u2019atelier paternel jusqu\u2019en 1866, date \u00e0 laquelle BERNARDEL p\u00e8re se retire des affaires dans sa demeure de Bougival.
Cette ann\u00e9e 1866 est donc capitale dans l\u2019histoire de ces deux familles. En bonne intelligence, les successeurs de deux des plus importants luthiers de l\u2019\u00e9poque choisissent de s\u2019associer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Ainsi est cr\u00e9\u00e9e la raison sociale \u00ab GAND & BERNARDEL fr\u00e8res \u00bb \u00e0 laquelle prennent part pour la famille GAND Charles Nicolas Eug\u00e8ne et pour la famille BERNARDEL Gustave Adolphe et son fr\u00e8re cadet Ernest Auguste. La maison \u00ab GAND & BERNARDEL fr\u00e8res \u00bb subsiste jusqu\u2019en 1886 date du d\u00e9c\u00e8s d\u2019Ernest Auguste BERNARDEL. De nouveau, la raison sociale change \u00e0 cette occasion et devient  \u00ab GAND & BERNARDEL \u00bb comme l\u2019attestent les \u00e9tiquettes de cette \u00e9poque.
La c\u00e9l\u00e8bre firme \u00ab GAND & BERNARDEL \u00bb subsiste jusqu\u2019en 1892.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

En effet, Charles Nicolas Eug\u00e8ne GAND, faisant valoir ses droits \u00e0 la retraite, Gustave BERNARDEL devient seul propri\u00e9taire de ce fleuron de la lutherie parisienne. Il en assurera la direction artistique et administrative jusqu\u2019en 1901. Reprise par les deux principaux ouvriers Albert F\u00e9lix CARESSA et Henri FRAN\u00c7AIS, la grande \u00ab Maison GAND & BERNARDEL \u00bb qui avait succ\u00e9d\u00e9 dignement \u00e0 la \u00ab Maison LUPOT \u00bb (fond\u00e9e en 1798 !) entre dans le XX\u00e8me<\/sup> si\u00e8cle ainsi que dans la derni\u00e8re p\u00e9riode de son existence sous le nom d\u00e9sormais c\u00e9l\u00e8bre de \u00ab Maison CARESSA & FRAN\u00c7AIS \u00bb.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Amongst the many illustrious names of French violin making in the 19th century, two stand out in particular: GAND and BERNARDEL. These two families gave to the French art of violin making magnificent representatives of the very first order. We will focus in particular on the \u201cGAND & BERNARDEL\u201d workshop whose instruments will feature at the next Vichy violin sales (June 4, 5 and 6, 2013).<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Let us go back in history first. Charles Fran\u00e7ois GAND, aka “GAND p\u00e8re”, and Auguste S\u00e9bastien BERNARDEL, aka “BERNARDEL p\u00e8re”, were two violin makers born respectively in 1787 and 1798. They both worked with the illustrious Nicolas LUPOT, known as “the French Stradivarius”. Charles Fran\u00e7ois GAND even became his son-in-law before taking over his workshop in 1824. For several years, Auguste S\u00e9bastien worked there, in the famous workshop of Rue Croix des Petits Champs, including two when Charles Fran\u00e7ois GAND was at the helm after the death of Nicolas LUPOT. He set up on his own in Paris in 1826.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Upon the death of Charles Fran\u00e7ois GAND, his two sons, Charles Adolphe and Charles Nicolas Eug\u00e8ne – also violin makers – took over the workshop from their father. In 1855, they changed its name to \u201cGAND Fr\u00e8res\u201d. This association lasted until the death of Charles Adolphe in 1866.
On the BERNARDEL family side, Gustave Adolphe and Ernest Auguste – the sons of Auguste S\u00e9bastien – worked in their father\u2019s workshop until 1866, when BERNARDEL p\u00e8re retired to his home in Bougival.
This year 1866 is crucial in the history of these two families: indeed, the successors of the two most important workshops of the time demonstrated shrewd business acumen by deciding to join forces that year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

As a result, the new company, whose official name was \u201cGAND & BERNARDEL fr\u00e8res\u201d, was created with, as its representatives, Charles Nicolas Eug\u00e8ne for the GAND family and Gustave Adolphe and his younger brother Ernest Auguste for the BERNARDEL family. The \u201cGAND & BERNARDEL fr\u00e8res\u201d name survived until the death of Ernest Auguste BERNARDEL in 1886. The company then changed name again and became “GAND & BERNARDEL” as evidenced by the labels of this time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The famous firm “GAND & BERNARDEL” continued to operate until 1892. That year, Charles Nicolas Eug\u00e8ne GAND decided to retire and Gustave BERNARDEL became the sole owner of this jewel of Parisian violin making. He was responsible for its artistic and administrative direction until 1901. It was then taken over by the two principal employees of the workshop, Albert F\u00e9lix CARESSA and Henri FRAN\u00c7AIS, and the great “Maison GAND & BERNARDEL”, which had been a worthy successor to “Maison LUPOT” (founded in 1798!) entered the 20th century as well as the last period of its existence under the now famous name of \u201cMaison CARESSA & FRAN\u00c7AIS\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
