Le 5 juin 2025, Vichy Ench\u00e8res pr\u00e9sentera une rare collection de tirages argentiques sign\u00e9s Louis Ingigliardi, plus connu sous le nom d\u2019INGI. Cette vente rassemble plusieurs dizaines de photographies, pour la plupart consacr\u00e9es \u00e0 des figures majeures de la musique du XXe si\u00e8cle. Ces photos, soigneusement conserv\u00e9es et souvent in\u00e9dites, t\u00e9moignent d\u2019une \u0153uvre unique \u00e0 la crois\u00e9e de la musique et de la photographie. Cet \u00e9v\u00e9nement est pour nous l\u2019occasion de revenir sur le parcours et l’\u0153uvre de cet artiste, qui nous permet d\u2019approcher la sensibilit\u00e9 des grands musiciens, et particuli\u00e8rement ceux du quatuor. Louis Ingigliardi est n\u00e9 \u00e0 Nice en 1915. Tr\u00e8s t\u00f4t form\u00e9 au violoncelle, il \u00e9tudie au Conservatoire de Nice avant de poursuivre son apprentissage \u00e0 Paris. Sa formation est interrompue par la guerre, mais il reprend ses \u00e9tudes d\u00e8s 1944 au Conservatoire Sup\u00e9rieur. Musicien professionnel, il \u00e9volue dans les milieux prestigieux de la sc\u00e8ne classique fran\u00e7aise et internationale.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u00c0 partir de 1954, INGI commence \u00e0 se consacrer \u00e0 la photographie. Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 ses collaborations avec des revues sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9es comme Le Strapontin <\/em>(magazine annon\u00e7ant des spectacles), il trouve un terrain d\u2019expression relatif \u00e0 la musique, qui lui permet de conjuguer ses deux passions. Son regard de musicien sera d\u00e9terminant puisqu\u2019il influencera tout au long de vie sa mani\u00e8re de photographier.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

INGI se distingue par son approche de la photographie fond\u00e9e sur la discr\u00e9tion et la complicit\u00e9 avec ses sujets. Il refuse les dispositifs techniques intrusifs comme le flash, pr\u00e9f\u00e9rant la lumi\u00e8re ambiante et les conditions naturelles. Ses s\u00e9ances sont rares, limit\u00e9es \u00e0 une douzaine de clich\u00e9s, souvent r\u00e9alis\u00e9es dans des environnements intimes –<\/strong> \u00e0 domicile, en loges, en r\u00e9p\u00e9tition.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Il privil\u00e9gie l\u2019\u00e9change et ses prises de vue s\u2019inscrivent dans le temps long d\u2019une conversation. Cette m\u00e9thode lui permet d\u2019atteindre une forme de v\u00e9rit\u00e9 du sujet, loin du formalisme du portrait pos\u00e9. La composition de l\u2019image ne s\u2019ach\u00e8ve jamais au moment du d\u00e9clenchement mais toujours apr\u00e8s un recadrage, qu\u2019il consid\u00e8re comme une phase essentielle, permettant une r\u00e9\u00e9criture visuelle et \u00e9motionnelle du moment capt\u00e9.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Le corpus pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 \u00e0 Vichy Ench\u00e8res illustre la richesse et la coh\u00e9rence de son travail en lien avec le monde des instruments du quatuor et cristallise toute une \u00e9poque. On retrouve notamment un portrait de Christian Ferras, photographi\u00e9 en 1957 alors qu\u2019il joue sur son Stradivarius \u201cle Pr\u00e9sident\u201d de 1721. Ce tirage d\u2019\u00e9poque, saisissant de retenue et d\u2019intensit\u00e9, incarne parfaitement l\u2019art d\u2019INGI, attentif \u00e0 l\u2019expression et \u00e0 la gestuelle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La s\u00e9rie d\u00e9di\u00e9e \u00e0 Yehudi Menuhin offre un autre exemple remarquable. Mains sur l\u2019instrument, portrait de profil, d\u00e9tails des doigts – chaque image propose une variation sur le rapport entre le corps et la musique, entre technique et inspiration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Du c\u00f4t\u00e9 des compositeurs, INGI photographie les figures majeures du XXe si\u00e8cle, de Chostakovitch \u00e0 Britten, en passant par Messiaen, Boulez, Stravinsky.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u00c0 chaque fois, il choisit des moments en marge de la sc\u00e8ne, les photographiant chez eux, en discussion, dans une posture de r\u00e9flexion ou d\u2019\u00e9coute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

INGI sait aussi \u00e9largir son spectre sans trahir son esth\u00e9tique. Les photographies de Serge Gainsbourg dans les coulisses de l\u2019Olympia en 1958, bien que diff\u00e9rentes dans leur sujet, prolongent la m\u00eame attention au silence et \u00e0 l\u2019instant.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Ce qui lie toutes ces images, c\u2019est une conception musicale de la photographie, pens\u00e9e en cycles et en reprises. En effet, il construit ses portraits comme une \u0153uvre musicale, autour d\u2019un th\u00e8me, et en en explorant les variations. Ce regard de compositeur se retrouve ainsi dans les encha\u00eenements d\u2019images et dans leur rythme.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Son travail sur le geste, sur la concentration et sur la posture traduit aussi une recherche du \u201ctemps musical\u201d dans l\u2019image qui, bien que silencieuse, est \u00e9vocatrice d\u2019un moment de musique associ\u00e9 \u00e0 une \u00e9motion. C\u2019est l\u00e0 sans doute l\u2019originalit\u00e9 de sa d\u00e9marche, qui ne cherche pas \u00e0 illustrer la musique, mais \u00e0 en capter les \u00e9motions et vibrations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

D\u00e8s la fin des ann\u00e9es 1950, INGI expose dans des galeries et salons majeurs, notamment \u00e0 Paris. Il est pr\u00e9sent \u00e0 la Galerie Taitbout en 1958, au Salon du portrait photographique \u00e0 la BnF en 1961, et dans plusieurs lieux parisiens jusqu\u2019aux ann\u00e9es 1990. En 2021, la Cour d\u2019appel de Versailles reconna\u00eet juridiquement l\u2019originalit\u00e9 artistique d\u2019un de ses clich\u00e9s de Menuhin, soulignant la valeur patrimoniale de son travail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On 5 June 2025, Vichy Ench\u00e8res will auction a rare collection of silver prints by Louis Ingigliardi, better known as INGI. This sale brings together several dozen photographs, most of them featuring major figures of 20th-century music. These carefully preserved, and often previously unseen, photos are part of a unique body of work at the crossroads between music and photography. This sale provides us with an opportunity to revisit the career and work of this artist, who allowed us to explore the sensibilities of great musicians, particularly those playing classical string instruments. These portraits resonate particularly well with the prestigious instruments offered for sale during this same auction, creating a striking dialogue between the performers and the instruments they played.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Louis Ingigliardi was born in Nice in 1915. His early training was in cello performance, which he studied at the Nice Conservatoire, before continuing his studies in Paris. His studies were interrupted by the war, but resumed in 1944 at the Conservatoire Sup\u00e9rieur. As a professional musician, he navigated the prestigious circles of the French and international classical scene.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

From 1954, INGI began to devote himself to photography. Through his collaborations with specialized magazines such as Le Strapontin (a magazine advertising performances), he found a means of expression in music, allowing him to combine his two passions. His musician’s perspective would be decisive, influencing his photography throughout his life.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

INGI stood out for his approach to photography based on discretion and intimacy with his subjects. He rejected intrusive technical devices such as flash, preferring ambient light and natural conditions. His sessions were rare, limited to a dozen shots, often taken in intimate settings \u2013 at home, in dressing rooms or during rehearsals.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

He favoured exchanges, and his shots were captured over the course of long conversations. This method allowed him to achieve a form of reality, far removed from the formalism of a posed portrait. The composition of the image never ended with the shutter release, but always after reframing, which he considered an essential phase, allowing for a visual and emotional rewriting of the captured moment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The body of work presented at Vichy Ench\u00e8res illustrates the depth and coherence of his output regarding the world of classical strings, and documents an entire era. Amongst them is a portrait of Christian Ferras, photographed in 1957, playing his 1721 Stradivarius “Le Pr\u00e9sident”. This period print, striking in its restraint and intensity, perfectly embodies INGI’s art, his attention to expression and gesture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The series dedicated to Yehudi Menuhin provides another remarkable example. Hands on the instrument, a profile portrait, details of the fingers\u2026 Each image offers a variation on the relationship between the human body and music, between technique and inspiration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This same approach is found in the portraits of Henryk Szeryng, Mstislav Rostropovich and Igor Oistrakh, as well as in images of conductors such as Charles Munch, Leonard Bernstein and Lorin Maazel. As for composers, INGI photographed the major figures of the 20th century, including Shostakovich, Britten, Messiaen, Boulez and Stravinsky.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Each time, he chose moments on the fringes of the stage, photographing his subjects at home, in conversation, or in a reflective or listening posture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

INGI also managed to broaden his scope without betraying his artistic vision. The photographs of Serge Gainsbourg backstage at the Olympia in 1958, although different in their subject matter, share the same focus on silence and the present moment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

What unites all these images is a musical approach to photography, conceived in cycles and repetitions. Indeed, he constructed his portraits like a piece of music, around a theme, exploring its variations. This composer’s perspective is thus reflected in the sequence of images and their rhythm.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

His work on gesture, concentration and posture also reflects a search for “musical time” in the image, which, although silent, is evocative of a moment of music associated with an emotion. This is undoubtedly the originality of his approach, which does not seek to illustrate music, but to capture its emotions and vibrations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

From the late 1950s, INGI exhibited in major galleries and salons, particularly in Paris. These include the Galerie Taitbout in 1958, the Salon du portrait photographique at the BnF in 1961, and several other Parisian venues until the 1990s. In 2021, the Versailles Court of Appeal legally recognized the artistic originality of one of his photographs of Menuhin, highlighting the value of his work from a heritage point of view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
