La vente du 5 juin 2025 de Vichy Ench\u00e8res comprend deux violons de Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume (1798\u20131875). L\u2019un, dat\u00e9 de 1865, suivant un mod\u00e8le Stradivarius ; l\u2019autre, r\u00e9alis\u00e9 en 1871, offrant une interpr\u00e9tation du mod\u00e8le Guarnerius. Ces deux instruments sont embl\u00e9matiques de la derni\u00e8re p\u00e9riode de production du ma\u00eetre parisien – celle de la maturit\u00e9 artistique.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Vuillaume 1865 : mod\u00e8le Stradivarius<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Le premier violon, fait en 1865, est en mod\u00e8le Stradivarius et porte l\u2019\u00e9tiquette d\u2019origine de la rue Demours avec paraphe manuscrit \u201c65\u201d et signature sur le fond. Il est dans un bon \u00e9tat de conservation et accompagn\u00e9 d\u2019une copie d\u2019un certificat Caressa & Fran\u00e7ais de 1921. Il convient de souligner l\u2019importance de ce certificat sur le plan historique puisque la maison Caressa & Fran\u00e7ais, h\u00e9riti\u00e8re de la prestigieuse lign\u00e9e Gand & Bernardel, \u00e9tait au d\u00e9but du XXe si\u00e8cle l\u2019une des r\u00e9f\u00e9rences mondiales en mati\u00e8re d\u2019expertise et de commerce d\u2019instruments \u00e0 cordes.
Anciennement propri\u00e9t\u00e9 du violoniste Paul Laporte dans les ann\u00e9es 1920, l\u2019instrument n\u2019a jamais quitt\u00e9 sa famille.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Ce violon appartient \u00e0 la phase tardive de Vuillaume, lorsque le luthier, ayant d\u00e9l\u00e9gu\u00e9 la gestion commerciale de son atelier \u00e0 ses associ\u00e9s – notamment \u00e0 Georges Chanot – se consacre exclusivement \u00e0 la fabrication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Les mod\u00e8les d\u2019apr\u00e8s Stradivarius constituent l\u2019ossature de la production de Vuillaume. Le luthier \u00e9tudia en profondeur le fameux \u201cMessie\u201d de 1716 – qu\u2019il acquit et conserva – et multiplia les copies dans une optique exp\u00e9rimentale. Ses r\u00e9pliques, qui ne sont jamais des calques, trahissent un regard analytique et une volont\u00e9 d\u2019adaptation des mod\u00e8les aux besoins des musiciens de son temps.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Vuillaume 1871 : mod\u00e8le Guarnerius<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Le second violon, dat\u00e9 de 1871 et num\u00e9rot\u00e9 2870, suit le mod\u00e8le Guarnerius del Ges\u00f9. Il porte la m\u00eame \u00e9tiquette de la rue Demours, le paraphe manuscrit \u201c71\u201d, ainsi que la double marque au fer \u201cVuillaume\u201d sur la table et le fond.
L\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat de Vuillaume pour Guarnerius appara\u00eet d\u00e8s les ann\u00e9es 1835-1840, notamment apr\u00e8s son \u00e9tude approfondie du \u201cCannone\u201d de Paganini.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

L\u2019instrument fait partie des derniers connus du luthier. Il porte le n\u00b02870, sur une production de pr\u00e8s de 3000 pi\u00e8ces r\u00e9f\u00e9renc\u00e9es – un fait exceptionnel pour un luthier du XIXe si\u00e8cle, qui r\u00e9sulte d\u2019un atelier organis\u00e9 comme une v\u00e9ritable manufacture, avec des ma\u00eetres d\u2019\u0153uvre tels que Derazey, Silvestre, Germain ou Maucotel.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Si Vuillaume s\u2019est impos\u00e9 comme le plus grand luthier fran\u00e7ais du XIXe si\u00e8cle, c\u2019est en raison de sa capacit\u00e9 \u00e0 conjuguer une fascination \u00e9rudite pour les ma\u00eetres italiens et une volont\u00e9 constante d\u2019exp\u00e9rimentation. Ses copies sont le produit d\u2019une d\u00e9marche presque scientifique, puisque Vuillaume prenait des empreintes, relevait les mensurations, \u00e9tudiait le vernis, les bois, les vo\u00fbtes et m\u00eame la microstructure des instruments anciens – souvent gr\u00e2ce aux acquisitions du marchand Luigi Tarisio.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Comme en attestent ces nouveaux instruments, il ne se contenta jamais de reproduire et modifia les vo\u00fbtes, ajusta les profils, allongea les touches, abaissa les hauteurs de table pour r\u00e9pondre aux attentes des musiciens et s\u2019adapter au nouveau r\u00e9pertoire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Vichy Ench\u00e8res sale on 5 June 2025 will include two violins by Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume (1798\u20131875). The first one is a Stradivarius model dating from 1865; the other, made in 1871, is an interpretation of the Guarnerius model. These two instruments are typical of the Parisian master’s final period of production, that of his artistic maturity.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The violin of 1865 after Stradivari<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

The first violin, made in 1865, is a Stradivarius model and bears the original label of rue Demours with handwritten \u201c65\u201d for the last two digits of the year, and a signature on the back. It is in good condition and comes with a copy of a Caressa & Fran\u00e7ais certificate from 1921. The historical importance of this certificate is worth pointing out, as Caressa & Fran\u00e7ais, the heir to the prestigious Maison Gand & Bernardel, were world-renowned experts and dealers in stringed instruments in the early 20th century.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

This instrument was formerly owned by violinist Paul Laporte in the 1920s, and it never left his family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It belongs to Vuillaume’s late period, when the maker, having delegated the commercial management of his workshop to his partners \u2013 notably Georges Chanot, dedicated himself exclusively to making.
The Stradivarius models form the backbone of Vuillaume’s output. The violin maker studied extensively the famous “Messiah” of 1716 \u2013 which he acquired and kept \u2013 and made numerous copies of it as a form of experimentation. His interpretations, which are never exact replicas, attest to his analytical eye and a desire to create instruments that met the needs of the musicians of his time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The violin of 1871 after Guarneri<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

The second violin, dated 1871 and numbered 2870, follows the Guarnerius del Ges\u00f9 model. It bears the same label of rue Demours, with handwritten \u201c71\u201d for the last two digits of the year, as well as the “Vuillaume” stamp on the inside front and back.
Vuillaume’s interest in Guarnerius emerged as early as 1835-1840, particularly after his detailed study of Paganini’s “Cannone.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

This instrument is one of the last known by the violin maker. It bears the number 2870, out of a production of nearly 3,000 known examples \u2013 an exceptional achievement for a 19th-century maker, and the result of a workshop organized like a true factory, with master makers such as Derazey, Silvestre, Germain and Maucotel.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Combining the legacy of the Italian masters with a quest for new ideals<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Vuillaume became the greatest French violin maker of the 19th century through his ability to combine a fascination with and detailed study of the Italian masters with a constant desire to experiment. His copies are the result of an almost scientific approach, as Vuillaume made moulds, recorded measurements, studied the varnish, the woods, the arches, and even the microstructure of antique instruments \u2013 often those acquired by the dealer Luigi Tarisio.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

As his own instruments attest, he never satisfied himself with simply reproducing originals. He modified the arches, adjusted the outlines, lengthened the fingerboards and lowered the height of the fronts to meet the expectations of musicians and adapt to the new repertoire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These two instruments provide us a new testimony into the duality of Vuillaume’s work \u2013 which alternated between honouring the old masters and introducing new ideas \u2013 and two examples of perfection in violin making.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
