\u00c0 l\u2019occasion de nos ventes d’instruments de musique \u00e0 vent, \u00e0 cordes pinc\u00e9es de novembre 2025 et celles d\u2019instruments de prestige de d\u00e9cembre 2025, Vichy Ench\u00e8res vous propose de plonger dans l\u2019univers intime de Gustave Villaume, \u00e0 travers la dispersion de son fonds d\u2019atelier. Figure reconnue de la lutherie lorraine et h\u00e9ritier de la grande tradition mirecurtienne, Villaume a \u0153uvr\u00e9 pendant plus d\u2019un demi-si\u00e8cle au service des musiciens. Son parcours, de Mirecourt \u00e0 Nancy, t\u00e9moigne de la continuit\u00e9 d\u2019un savoir-faire transmis de g\u00e9n\u00e9ration en g\u00e9n\u00e9ration. Rest\u00e9 intact depuis sa disparition, ce fonds r\u00e9unit des instruments, gabarits, outils, photographies et documents, comme autant de t\u00e9moins rares du quotidien de Villaume dans son atelier, mais aussi de tout un pan de la lutherie fran\u00e7aise du XXe si\u00e8cle. Sa mise en lumi\u00e8re est l\u2019occasion unique d\u2019approcher l\u2019univers du ma\u00eetre et d\u2019en saisir toute la valeur patrimoniale.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Gustave Eug\u00e8ne Villaume est n\u00e9 en 1899 \u00e0 Mirecourt. Il est issu d\u2019une famille de luthiers, descendant directement de la seconde branche des Villaume, comprenant Claude Fran\u00e7ois Villaume. En 1911, \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e2ge de 12 ans, apr\u00e8s son certificat d\u2019\u00e9tudes, il entre en apprentissage chez L\u00e9on Mougenot \u00e0 Mirecourt. De 1911 \u00e0 1913, il remporte tous les ans le premiers prix aux concours professionnels de lutherie de Mirecour<\/a>t<\/a>. En 1911, il r\u00e9alise son premier violon, un instrument de 357 mm portant son \u00e9tiquette et sa marque au fer sous le talon.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Conserv\u00e9 pr\u00e9cieusement dans son atelier toute sa vie, cet instrument est aujourd\u2019hui mis en lumi\u00e8re \u00e0 Vichy Ench\u00e8res. \u00c0 forte valeur sentimentale, ce violon fondateur t\u00e9moigne du talent pr\u00e9coce de Gustave Villaume et du savoir-faire traditionnel dont il est l\u2019h\u00e9ritier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Durant son apprentissage \u00e0 Mirecourt, Gustave Villaume est aussi l\u2019\u00e9l\u00e8ve de Ren\u00e9 Jacquet-Gand. Il est alors immerg\u00e9 dans la grande tradition mirecurtienne, r\u00e9put\u00e9e pour son exigence technique et son respect des ma\u00eetres anciens.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u00c0 la fin de son apprentissage, vers 1914-1915, Gustave Villaume perfectionne sa formation en travaillant comme ouvrier-luthier dans plusieurs ateliers de renom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il int\u00e8gre d\u2019abord la Maison Caressa & Fran\u00e7ais \u00e0 Paris, successeurs de Gand & Bernardel. Ce passage par un grand atelier parisien lui permet d\u2019approcher des instruments de facture diff\u00e9rente, tels que des mod\u00e8les de grands ma\u00eetres italiens. Cette exp\u00e9rience lui permet aussi de d\u00e9couvrir de nouvelles techniques et de s\u2019impr\u00e9gner du savoir-faire parisien, compl\u00e9mentaire \u00e0 sa formation mirecurtienne. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peu apr\u00e8s, il est recrut\u00e9 par la Maison Jacquot \u00e0 Nancy. La famille Jacquot, repr\u00e9sent\u00e9e par Albert Jacquot et son fils, est alors une r\u00e9f\u00e9rence dans le milieu de la lutherie lorraine.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Le fonds d\u2019atelier de Villaume rend compte de cette exp\u00e9rience, puisqu\u2019il comprend notamment une guitare \u00e0 cornes de C. Jacquot et l\u2019\u00e9dition de 1912 de l\u2019ouvrage sur la lutherie lorraine et italienne d\u2019Albert Jacquot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cependant, son exp\u00e9rience dans la Maison Jacquot fut de courte dur\u00e9e car cette derni\u00e8re fit faillite dans les ann\u00e9es 1920. Cet \u00e9v\u00e9nement fut d\u00e9cisif pour Villaume qui s’installa alors \u00e0 son compte, en 1924, \u00e2g\u00e9 de seulement 25 ans. Il s\u2019\u00e9tablit au 9 Place du March\u00e9 dans la vieille ville de Nancy, comme on peut le lire sur ses \u00e9tiquettes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

L\u2019atelier de Nancy<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Au sein de son atelier, Gustave Villaume r\u00e9alise principalement des violons, ainsi que quelques altos et violoncelles. Ses instruments sont souvent inspir\u00e9s du mod\u00e8le Guarneri et pr\u00e9sentent un vernis \u00e0 l\u2019huile de belle qualit\u00e9, aux teintes variant du jaune dor\u00e9 clair au rouge-brun fonc\u00e9. Le fonds d\u2019atelier aujourd\u2019hui mis au jour est une v\u00e9ritable fen\u00eatre sur la mani\u00e8re dont travaillait Gustave Villaume dans son atelier. Il comprend des gabarits de violon, dont bien s\u00fbr ceux de Guarneri, mais aussi d\u2019Amati ou de Koltz.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Plusieurs pi\u00e8ces nous offrent un regard plus intimiste sur le quotidien de Gustave Villaume dans son atelier, \u00e0 l’instar d\u2019outils tels que des rabots, gouges, limes, ou canifs, ou encore des accessoires de lutherie dont des crins, piques, chevilles, chevalets, cordes ou touches\u2026 Ces traces mat\u00e9rielles offrent un t\u00e9moignage pr\u00e9cieux du travail de Villaume et forment en m\u00eame temps un patrimoine rare sur la vie des luthiers \u00e0 Mirecourt au XXe si\u00e8cle.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

La mise en lumi\u00e8re de ce fonds d\u2019atelier permet aussi la d\u00e9couverte d\u2019un violon de Villaume dat\u00e9 1925 et num\u00e9rot\u00e9 18, r\u00e9alis\u00e9 pour sa femme Berthe Mallagnacq. Fabriqu\u00e9 un an apr\u00e8s la fondation de l\u2019atelier, ce violon se distingue par son ornementation exceptionnelle. Il poss\u00e8de une t\u00eate sculpt\u00e9e repr\u00e9sentant une femme et un dos \u00e9galement sculpt\u00e9. Il porte la marque au fer \u201cGustave Villaume \u00e0 Nancy\u201d sous le talon, une \u00e9tiquette et la signature autographe de Gustave Villaume, ainsi que la d\u00e9dicace \u201c\u00e0 ma femme Berthe Mallagnacq\u201d. Le luthier r\u00e9alisa ainsi cet instrument d\u2019exception en hommage \u00e0 son \u00e9pouse, peut-\u00eatre \u00e0 l\u2019occasion de leur mariage ou d\u2019un \u00e9v\u00e9nement familial. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Une rare photographie, \u00e9galement conserv\u00e9e dans le fonds d\u2019atelier, le montre pr\u00e9sentant fi\u00e8rement ce violon d\u00e9di\u00e9 \u00e0 Berthe. La minutie et l\u2019originalit\u00e9 des ornements sculpt\u00e9s sur ce violon t\u00e9moignent de l\u2019\u00e9tendue du savoir-faire de Gustave Villaume, qui n\u2019h\u00e9sitait pas \u00e0 mobiliser toute son ing\u00e9niosit\u00e9 et sa ma\u00eetrise technique pour des pi\u00e8ces sp\u00e9ciales, sans qu\u2019elles soient n\u00e9cessairement destin\u00e9es \u00e0 la vente.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Portant le n\u00b018, ce violon de 1925 peut \u00eatre rapproch\u00e9 d\u2019un autre mod\u00e8le issu du fonds d\u2019atelier, dat\u00e9 de 1926 et num\u00e9rot\u00e9 67. R\u00e9alis\u00e9s \u00e0 moins d\u2019un an d\u2019intervalle, ces deux instruments t\u00e9moignent d\u2019une activit\u00e9 d\u00e9j\u00e0 soutenue chez Villaume d\u00e8s ses d\u00e9buts en tant qu\u2019artisan ind\u00e9pendant.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

En 1929, Gustave s\u2019associe avec ses deux fr\u00e8res Ren\u00e9 Villaume (1903-1970) et Jean Villaume (1905-1989) pour cr\u00e9er la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Villaume Fr\u00e8res<\/a>. Les trois fr\u00e8res, tous luthiers form\u00e9s \u00e0 Mirecourt, s\u2019unissent temporairement pour fabriquer des violons, altos et violoncelles en plus grande quantit\u00e9. Ren\u00e9 et Jean travaillent depuis Mirecourt dans l\u2019atelier familial situ\u00e9 au 42 rue Vuillaume, tandis que Gustave reste \u00e0 Nancy<\/a>. Cette collaboration dura jusqu\u2019\u00e0 environ 1935. Elle correspond aux difficiles ann\u00e9es de la Grande D\u00e9pression, qui voient l\u2019activit\u00e9 ralentir et poussent les artisans \u00e0 se regrouper pour survivre \u00e9conomiquement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Par la suite, Ren\u00e9 Villaume fut embauch\u00e9 chez Laberte-Humbert Fr\u00e8res \u00e0 Mirecourt et Jean Villaume quitta progressivement la lutherie comme m\u00e9tier principal pour devenir facteur des Postes, en continuant \u00e0 fabriquer des violons qu\u2019en amateur le soir, jusque vers 1980<\/a>. Quant \u00e0 Gustave Villaume, il demeura \u00e0 son compte \u00e0 Nancy, signant \u00e0 nouveau ses instruments \u201cGustave Villaume \u00e0 Nancy\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Apr\u00e8s la Seconde Guerre mondiale, Gustave Villaume poursuit son activit\u00e9 de luthier \u00e0 Nancy pendant plusieurs d\u00e9cennies. La gamme d\u2019instruments qu\u2019il produit s\u2019\u00e9largit, et comprend d\u00e9sormais des contrebasses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il assurait aussi bien la fabrication que la restauration d\u2019instruments anciens, comme en atteste ce fonds d’atelier comprenant de nombreux violons portant des \u00e9tiquettes apocryphes de Stainer, Testore ou encore Nicolas A\u00een\u00e9.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA la fin de sa carri\u00e8re, il a fabriqu\u00e9 des contrebasses. Les diff\u00e9rences extr\u00eames de r\u00e9mun\u00e9rations qu\u2019il d\u00e9couvre pour un m\u00eame travail entre Mirecourt et Paris l\u2019indignent et lui font refuser la restauration de harpes qu\u2019il avait dans un premier temps accept\u00e9e. Les salaires de mis\u00e8re r\u00e9pandus \u00e0 Mirecourt ont incit\u00e9 les vieux luthiers \u00e0 orienter leurs enfants vers d\u2019autres m\u00e9tiers.\u201d[1]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plus original encore, ce fonds r\u00e9v\u00e8le la pr\u00e9sence d\u2019un violon et de mandolines miniatures, fortes de d\u00e9tails admirablement soign\u00e9s. Villaume a pu les fabriquer par d\u00e9fi technique ou pour attirer l\u2019attention de clients lors d\u2019expositions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De m\u00eame, on notera une belle viole d\u2019amour \u00e0 t\u00eate sculpt\u00e9e d\u2019un homme souriant portant son \u00e9tiquette. Cet instrument t\u00e9moigne \u00e0 nouveau de sa curiosit\u00e9 et de la richesse de son savoir-faire.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Notons que Villaume r\u00e9alisait et revendait \u00e9galement des archets d\u2019autres archetiers, sur lesquels il ajoutait son estampille. Gustave Villaume meurt en 1983, \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e2ge de 84 ans, dans sa ville natale de Mirecourt. Il \u00e9tait retourn\u00e9 vivre ses derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es dans les Vosges, probablement pour se rapprocher de sa famille – son fr\u00e8re Jean y r\u00e9sidant notamment. Villaume, who was a renowned figure in violin making in Lorraine and an heir to the great Mirecourt tradition, spent over half a century at the service of musicians. His career, from Mirecourt to Nancy, embodies the continuous passing down of a craft from generation to generation. This collection of items, which has been preserved in their original form since his death, includes instruments, templates, tools, photographs and documents, providing a rare glimpse into Villaume’s daily life in his workshop, and more generally into a large period of French violin making in the 20th<\/sup> century. Gustave Eug\u00e8ne Villaume was born in 1899 in Mirecourt. He came from a family of violin makers, directly descended from the second branch of the Villaume family tree, which included Claude Fran\u00e7ois Villaume. In 1911, at the age of 12, after completing his primary education certificate, he began an apprenticeship with L\u00e9on Mougenot in Mirecourt. From 1911 to 1913, he won first prize every year at the p<\/a>rofessional violin making competitions in Mirecourt<\/a>. In 1911, he made his first violin, a 357mm instrument bearing his label and brand under the heel.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

This instrument was carefully preserved in his workshop throughout his life, and is now included in the sale at Vichy Ench\u00e8res. This formative violin of great sentimental value attests to Gustave Villaume’s precocious talent and the traditional craftsmanship he inherited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During his apprenticeship in Mirecourt, Gustave Villaume also studied under Ren\u00e9 Jacquet-Gand. He was thus immersed in the great Mirecourt tradition, renowned for its technical precision and perpetuation of the art of the old masters.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

At the end of his apprenticeship, around 1914-1915, Gustave Villaume furthered his training by working as a violin maker in several renowned workshops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He first joined the workshop of Caressa & Fran\u00e7ais, successors to Gand & Bernardel, in Paris. This experience in a major Parisian workshop allowed him to work with a great variety of instruments, including examples by great Italian masters. This experience also allowed him to learn new techniques and integrate Parisian expertise into his work, which complemented his Mirecourt training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Jacquot family, led by Albert Jacquot and his son, was then a leading family in the violin making trade in Lorraine.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Shortly after, he was recruited by the Jacquot workshop in Nancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The contents of Villaume’s workshop include items that relate to this period in his life, in particular a horn guitar by C. Jacquot and the 1912 edition of Albert Jacquot’s work on Lorraine and Italian violin making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, his tenure at the Jacquot workshop was short-lived, as the firm went bankrupt in the 1920s. This turn of events proved decisive for Villaume, who subsequently set up his own business in 1924, at the age of only 25. He established himself at 9 Place du March\u00e9<\/em> in the old town of Nancy, as his labels indicate.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The workshop in Nancy<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

In his workshop, Gustave Villaume primarily made violins, as well as some violas and cellos. His instruments were often inspired by the Guarneri model and featured a high-quality oil varnish, with hues ranging from light golden yellow to dark reddish-brown. The workshop contents recently unearthed provide a window into Gustave Villaume’s working methods. They include violin templates, in particular for Guarneri models, but also for Amati and Klotz ones.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

There are items that provide a more intimate glimpse into Gustave Villaume’s daily life in his workshop, including violin making tools \u2013 planes, gouges, files and penknives \u2013 and supplies \u2013 horsehair, pegs, bridges, strings and fingerboards. These objects offer an invaluable insight into Villaume’s work, whilst at the same time providing rare historical information about the lives of violin makers in Mirecourt during the 20th<\/sup> century.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The discovery of these workshop contents also led to the discovery of a Villaume violin dated 1925 and numbered 18, made for his wife, Berthe Mallagnacq. This violin was made a year after the workshop was established, and is remarkable for its exceptional ornamentation. It has a carved head representing a woman and a similarly carved back. It bears the brand \u201cGustave Villaume \u00e0 Nancy\u201d under the heel, a label, and Gustave Villaume’s handwritten signature, as well as the dedication \u201cto my wife Berthe Mallagnacq\u201d. The violin maker thus created this exceptional instrument as a tribute to his wife, perhaps on the occasion of their marriage or a family event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A rare photograph, also part of the workshop contents, depicts him proudly presenting this violin dedicated to Berthe. The level of detail and originality of the carved decoration on this instrument demonstrate the wide range of expertise of Gustave Villaume. He was willing to apply all his ingenuity and technical expertise for special pieces, even if they were not intended for sale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This violin of 1925, which bears the number 18, is worth comparing to another instrument in the workshop contents, one dated 1926 and numbered 67. Made less than a year apart, these two instruments demonstrate Villaume’s already prolific output from the very beginning of his career as an independent craftsman.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

In 1929, Gustave partnered with his two brothers, Ren\u00e9 Villaume (1903-1970) and Jean Villaume (1905-1989), to create the company Villaume Fr\u00e8res<\/a>. The three brothers, who were all violin makers trained in Mirecourt, temporarily joined forces to produce violins, violas and cellos in larger quantities. Ren\u00e9 and Jean worked from Mirecourt in the family workshop located at 42 rue Vuillaume, whilst Gustave remained in Nancy<\/a> This collaboration lasted until approximately 1935. It coincided with the difficult years of the Great Depression, which saw a slow-down in demand and forced businesses to consolidate in order to survive economically.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

After this, Ren\u00e9 Villaume was hired by Laberte-Humbert Fr\u00e8res in Mirecourt, and Jean Villaume gradually moved away from violin making to become a postal worker, continuing to make violins as a hobby in the evenings until around 1980.<\/a> As for Gustave Villaume, he remained self-employed in Nancy, and returned to signing his instruments \u201cGustave Villaume \u00e0 Nancy\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

After the Second World War, Gustave Villaume continued to work as a violin maker in Nancy for several decades. The range of instruments he produced expanded to include double basses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As well as restoring antique instruments, he made copies of those, as evidenced by the contents of his workshop, which include several violins bearing facsimile labels of Stainer, Testore and Nicolas A\u00een\u00e9.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAt the end of his career, he made double basses. The sharp difference in pay between Mirecourt and Paris for the same work outraged him and led him to refuse the harp restoration work he had initially accepted. More unusually, the workshop contents include a miniature violin and mandolins. Villaume may have made them as a technical challenge or to attract the attention of clients at exhibitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similarly, there is a beautiful viola d\u2019amore with a carved head of a smiling man bearing his label, which again attests to the breadth of his interests and expertise.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

We should also point out that Villaume made bows, in addition to selling bows made by other makers, after having added his brand to them. As a result, several bows branded \u201cGustave Bernardel\u201d, \u201cMorizot Fr\u00e8res\u201d, \u201cProsper Colas\u201d, \u201cCuniot-Hury\u201d and \u201cSimon Voirin\u201d can be found in his workshop contents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The variety of names on these bows is a testimony to the extent of the collaborations between Mirecourt and Paris makers at the beginning of the 20th<\/sup><\/sub> century, as well as the common practice of reselling or rebranding bows made by other makers with one’s own brand.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Gustave Villaume died in 1983, at the age of 84, in his hometown of Mirecourt. He had returned to live his final years in the Vosges region, probably to be closer to his family \u2013 his brother Jean, in particular, resided there. * His death marked the end of a career spanning more than 60 years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Gustave Villaume’s contribution to French violin making can nowadays be appreciated in the excellent craftsmanship and enduring quality of his instruments. Nearly forty years after his death, his violins, violas and cellos are still played and appreciated by musicians and collectors alike.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\n

There is growing interest in his instruments amongst both musicians and collectors. The record sale of a 1935 cello by this maker at Vichy Ench\u00e8res on 2 June 2022 for \u20ac20,000 including fees is evidence of this trend.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

By bringing to light the contents of Gustave Villaume\u2019s workshop, Vichy Ench\u00e8res wishes to pay tribute to this maker and his work, but also put the spotlight on the fine craft of violin making, where every detail counts. This sale will provide an opportunity to rediscover this meticulous art and its diversity through instruments, templates and various items that have remained untouched to this day.
