Le 2 mai 2026, les amateurs de cuivres historiques auront rendez-vous \u00e0 Vichy pour une vente exceptionnelle o\u00f9 r\u00e9sonnera l\u2019\u00e9cho d\u2019un nom l\u00e9gendaire : \u201cRaoux, seul ordinaire du Roi\u201d. Cette trompe de chasse en r\u00e9 produite par Raoux illustre l\u2019aboutissement d\u2019une longue \u00e9volution technique et sonore. Elle porte l\u2019estampille du facteur du roi, et t\u00e9moigne d\u2019un \u00e2ge d\u2019or de la facture des cuivres, venant dialoguer avec son anc\u00eatre baroque – un grand cor de Cr\u00e9tien – pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 dans la m\u00eame vente.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

La famille Raoux compte parmi les plus illustres dynasties de facteurs d\u2019instruments \u00e0 vent en France, et fut active du XVII\u00e8me au XIX\u00e8me si\u00e8cle. Son fondateur, Louis Raoux (1648-1728), s\u2019installe \u00e0 Nancy en 1663 o\u00f9 il devient chaudronnier privil\u00e9gi\u00e9, ayant le droit exclusif de travailler le laiton et de fabriquer des instruments de guerre et de chasse, comprenant les cors et trompettes. Son fils Fran\u00e7ois Raoux (v.1695-1749) poursuit l\u2019activit\u00e9 familiale. \u00c9tabli \u00e0 Versailles en 1741, il est nomm\u00e9 \u201cfaiseur de cors de chasse du Roy\u201d, fournissant la v\u00e9nerie de Louis XV jusqu\u2019\u00e0 sa mort en 1749<\/a>. Apr\u00e8s Fran\u00e7ois Raoux, deux de ses fils reprennent l\u2019atelier. Pierre Raoux (1723-ap.1789) maintient l\u2019atelier originel de Nancy ; tandis que Joseph Raoux (1725-1787) s\u2019\u00e9tablit \u00e0 Paris en 1749.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Bien qu\u2019il ne fasse pas partie d\u2019une corporation au d\u00e9part – \u00e9tant chaudronnier – Joseph finit par int\u00e9grer la guilde des luthiers en 1754 et obtient le titre de \u201cma\u00eetre luthier faiseur d\u2019instruments de musique<\/a>\u201d par arr\u00eat\u00e9 du Conseil du Roi. Il devient le principal facteur de trompes de chasse du roi sous Louis XV et Louis XVI. Les sources indiquent que Joseph Raoux fut le fournisseur exclusif des trompes de chasse de la Couronne<\/a>. Son atelier parisien, successivement situ\u00e9 en des lieux strat\u00e9giques, enclos des Quinze-Vingts, rue Tiquetonne, puis Place du Louvre vers 1781, r\u00e9pond aux commandes royales et de la noblesse. Joseph Raoux, tout en continuant de fournir les \u00e9quipages de v\u00e9nerie royaux, contribue au nouvel essor des cuivres dans la musique.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u00c0 la mort de Joseph en 1787, son fils Lucien Joseph Raoux (1752-1823) reprend l\u2019atelier parisien. Form\u00e9 aupr\u00e8s de son p\u00e8re, il avait un temps collabor\u00e9 avec un concurrent, Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Corm\u00e9ry, avant de revenir dans l\u2019entreprise familiale[1]<\/sup><\/a>. En 1790, en pleine tourmente r\u00e9volutionnaire, Lucien Joseph transf\u00e8re l\u2019atelier rue Serpente \u00e0 Paris, adresse qui restera celle de la maison Raoux pendant plus d\u2019un demi-si\u00e8cle. L\u2019activit\u00e9 se poursuit malgr\u00e9 les changements de r\u00e9gime. Lucien Joseph Raoux va jouer un r\u00f4le majeur dans le perfectionnement du cor \u201cmoderne\u201d en France. D\u00e9j\u00e0 avant la R\u00e9volution, il s\u2019attache \u00e0 faire \u00e9voluer les cors de chasse traditionnels pour les adapter aux exigences de l\u2019orchestre naissant. En 1791, avec le concours du corniste virtuose Carl T\u00fcrrschmidt, il met au point un nouveau mod\u00e8le de cor d\u2019orchestre dit \u201ccor solo\u201d, \u00e9quip\u00e9 de cinq tons de rechange, sp\u00e9cialement con\u00e7u pour les parties solistes<\/a>. Un exemplaire superbe de ce cor solo, offert par Raoux au jeune Louis-Fran\u00e7ois Dauprat \u00e0 l\u2019occasion de son premier prix de cor au Conservatoire en 1797, est aujourd\u2019hui conserv\u00e9 au Mus\u00e9e de la Musique \u00e0 Paris. Ce geste symbolique illustre les liens privil\u00e9gi\u00e9s que Raoux entretenait avec les musiciens d\u2019\u00e9lite de son \u00e9poque. De fait, Lucien Joseph collabora \u00e9troitement avec les cornistes les plus renomm\u00e9s de l\u2019Op\u00e9ra de Paris et du Conservatoire. Outre Dauprat, on sait qu\u2019il a fabriqu\u00e9 des cors pour des virtuoses<\/a> tels que Giovanni Punto, Heinrich Domnich, Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Duvernoy, Jean-Kilien Kenn ou Lebrun au tournant du XIX\u00e8me si\u00e8cle.
L\u2019atelier de la rue Serpente tourne alors \u00e0 plein r\u00e9gime, combinant tradition et innovation. Lucien Joseph, jusqu\u2019\u00e0 son d\u00e9c\u00e8s en 1823, perfectionne la facture des cors naturels sans piston, au point de les rendre tr\u00e8s pris\u00e9s des cornistes solistes de l\u2019\u00e9poque. Il est aussi l\u2019un des rares facteurs \u00e0 oser la fabrication de trompettes circulaires au d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 1820, instrument original qu\u2019il destine aux orchestres romantiques. L\u2019exemple de la trompette circulaire r\u00e9alis\u00e9e en 1825 par Auguste Raoux pour l\u2019Op\u00e9ra-Comique – pass\u00e9e \u00e0 Vichy Ench\u00e8res le 7 mai 2022 – a montr\u00e9 le succ\u00e8s \u00e9ph\u00e9m\u00e8re mais r\u00e9el de ces cr\u00e9ations aupr\u00e8s des trompettistes parisiens de la Restauration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L\u2019estampille \u201cRaoux, seul ordinaire du Roi, rue Serpente \u00e0 Paris\u201d, pr\u00e9sente sur l\u2019instrument de la vente du 2 mai 2026, est en usage au moins depuis Joseph Raoux. Rappelons que Gustave Chouquet rapportait l\u2019existence d\u2019une trompe de chasse dat\u00e9e 1695 grav\u00e9e \u201cfait par Raoux, seul ordinaire du Roy, place du Louvre pr\u00e8s de l\u2019odiance du ministre, \u00e0 Paris 1695\u201d, dont la localisation est inconnue[1]<\/sup><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Comme l\u2019a montr\u00e9 Thierry Maniguet, l\u2019activit\u00e9 des Raoux, au milieu du XVIII\u00e8me si\u00e8cle, est largement tourn\u00e9e vers la trompe de chasse. L\u2019exemple de Joseph Raoux est int\u00e9ressant. Sonneur lui-m\u00eame, il travaillait principalement pour une client\u00e8le de veneurs. Les archives en t\u00e9moignent clairement, puisqu\u2019entre 1769 et 1774 puis entre 1782 et 1783, le marquis de Louvois lui commande \u00e0 lui seul une vingtaine de trompes, en plus de leur entretien r\u00e9gulier[2]<\/sup><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

C\u2019est dans ce contexte qu\u2019il obtient le titre d\u2019ordinaire du Roi, d\u00e9signant un fournisseur r\u00e9gulier de la Cour. Plusieurs instruments conserv\u00e9s portent cette mention, associ\u00e9e aux diff\u00e9rentes adresses de l\u2019atelier. \u00c0 partir des ann\u00e9es 1780, l\u2019inscription \u00e9volue en \u201cseul ordinaire du Roi\u201d, sans indiquer un monopole absolu, mais plut\u00f4t une position dominante – probablement dans le domaine sp\u00e9cifique de la trompe de chasse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Comme nous l\u2019avons vu plus haut, l’adresse rue Serpente, pr\u00e9sente sur notre instrument, renvoie quant \u00e0 elle \u00e0 la g\u00e9n\u00e9ration suivante, celle de Lucien-Joseph Raoux, qui reprend l\u2019atelier apr\u00e8s la R\u00e9volution. Comme souvent, il conserve les titres h\u00e9rit\u00e9s, devenus de v\u00e9ritables marques d\u2019atelier. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ainsi, l\u2019inscription \u201cseul ordinaire du Roi\u201d ne d\u00e9signe pas seulement un homme, mais renvoie \u00e0 l\u2019histoire de la dynastie intrins\u00e8quement li\u00e9e \u00e0 la v\u00e9nerie royale, dont elle affirme le prestige et la continuit\u00e9. Outre ce mod\u00e8le, Vichy Ench\u00e8res avait d\u00e9j\u00e0 vendu, en 2009, un cor portant l\u2019inscription grav\u00e9e \u201cfait \u00e0 Paris par Raoux, seul ordinaire du Roy, Place du Louvre\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

D\u2019Auguste Raoux \u00e0 la fin d\u2019une \u00e8re<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

D\u00e8s 1814, le fils de Lucien, Marcel Auguste Raoux (1795-1871), obtient du roi Louis XVIII le brevet de \u201cFacteur d\u2019instruments du Roi et des th\u00e9\u00e2tres royaux\u201d. Ce titre conf\u00e8re \u00e0 l\u2019atelier le monopole de production des instruments \u00e0 vent pour la Cour et les institutions royales comme l\u2019Op\u00e9ra. L\u2019entreprise atteint alors son apog\u00e9e et les cors naturels et trompes de chasse estampill\u00e9s Raoux sont consid\u00e9r\u00e9s comme ce qui se fait de mieux en Europe au milieu du XIX\u00e8me si\u00e8cle, pris\u00e9s jusqu\u2019en Angleterre<\/a>. Cependant, en 1828-1830 apparaissent \u00e0 Paris les premiers cors \u00e0 pistons import\u00e9s d\u2019Allemagne, introduisant une concurrence technologique en rendant l\u2019instrument totalement chromatique et en \u00e9vitant la n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 d\u2019utiliser les sons bouch\u00e9s en introduisant la main dans le pavillon.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Surtout, la R\u00e9volution de 1830 met fin au r\u00e9gime et Auguste Raoux perd ses brevets royaux<\/a> lors de la chute de Charles X. Bien qu\u2019il continue son activit\u00e9 et obtiendra en 1852 le titre de \u201cFournisseur de l\u2019Empereur\u201d de Napol\u00e9on III, la maison Raoux doit affronter la concurrence grandissante d\u2019autres facteurs innovants, tel Adolphe Sax qui remportera en 1845 le concours des instruments d\u2019orchestre pour l\u2019arm\u00e9e fran\u00e7aise. Apr\u00e8s des d\u00e9cennies de succ\u00e8s puis de difficult\u00e9s, Auguste Raoux finit par c\u00e9der en 1857 le fonds de commerce \u00e0 un autre facteur, Jacques-Christophe Labbaye<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

A c\u00f4t\u00e9 du grand cor en demi-lune de Cr\u00e9tien, \u00e9galement pr\u00e9sent dans la vente Vichy Ench\u00e8res du 2 mai 2026, la trompe de chasse en r\u00e9 de Raoux illustre l\u2019\u00e9volution du cor de chasse entre le XVII\u00e8me et le XIX\u00e8me si\u00e8cle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Au XVII\u00e8me si\u00e8cle, les premiers grands cors m\u00e9talliques remplacent les petits instruments utilitaires comme le huchet n\u2019\u00e9mettant qu\u2019un son. La forme en demi-lune, d\u00e9velopp\u00e9e notamment par les Cr\u00e9tien, permet d\u2019allonger un peu le tube et d\u2019enrichir les possibilit\u00e9s sonores. Vers 1680, ces instruments sont adopt\u00e9s \u00e0 la cour de Louis XIV, marquant l\u2019essor de la trompe de chasse dans la v\u00e9nerie royale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Au XVIII\u00e8me si\u00e8cle, l\u2019instrument \u00e9volue vers la trompe en R\u00e9, circulaire et beaucoup plus longue, ce qui permet l\u2019\u00e9mission de nombreux harmoniques rendant l\u2019instrument pratiquement diatonique dans l\u2019aigu. Elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 introduite dans les fanfares de chasse sous l\u2019impulsion du marquis de Dampierre.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Si les premiers mod\u00e8les apparaissent chez les Cr\u00e9tien, la famille Raoux en assure le perfectionnement et la diffusion, notamment avec la trompe \u00e0 la \u201cDauphine\u201d. Cette filiation directe entre les deux ateliers est essentielle dans l\u2019histoire de l\u2019instrument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dans le m\u00eame temps, le cor quitte progressivement la seule sph\u00e8re de la chasse pour entrer dans celle de la musique. Adapt\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019orchestre gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 l\u2019ajout de tons de rechange, permettant de changer la tonalit\u00e9 de base de l\u2019instrument, il devient un instrument \u00e0 part enti\u00e8re, auquel les Raoux contribuent largement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La trompe en r\u00e9 de Raoux propos\u00e9e ici est l\u2019aboutissement de cette \u00e9volution. Plus compacte que les grands cors anciens, elle conserve pourtant la m\u00eame fonction : sonner en plein air. Elle t\u00e9moigne \u00e0 la fois de la continuit\u00e9 d\u2019un usage et de la transformation d\u2019un instrument de signal en instrument de musique, reliant directement l\u2019h\u00e9ritage des Cr\u00e9tien \u00e0 la tradition des Raoux.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

On peut ainsi, pour finir, reprendre les mots de Jo\u00ebl Bou\u00ebss\u00e9e : \u201cLa conclusion se d\u00e9gageant de tout ceci est d\u00e8s lors fort nette ; Cr\u00e9tien et Raoux doivent partager l\u2019honneur d\u2019avoir cr\u00e9\u00e9 la trompe en r\u00e9 que le marquis de Dampierre sortit en 1722 des diverses trompes d\u2019\u00e9glise pour la faire adopter \u00e0 la v\u00e9nerie du roi en ao\u00fbt 1723 et la voir ensuite, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 Lebrun, autre fournisseur du roi, devenir en 1729, la Dauphine, nom qui disparut avec le Dauphin et ne fut remplac\u00e9 qu\u2019en 1818 par l\u2019expression d\u2019atelier \u201ctrompe Dampierre\u201d .<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The hunting horn in D made by Raoux in this sale represents the culmination of a long evolution from a technical and sonic point of view. It bears the stamp of the King’s maker, and attests to a golden age of brass instrument making, while providing an interesting perspective on its Baroque ancestor \u2013 a great horn by Cr\u00e9tien \u2013 also included in the sale.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The Raoux family is among the most illustrious dynasties of wind instrument makers in France, and it was active from the 17th to the 19th centuries. Its founder, Louis Raoux (1648 \u2013 1728), settled in Nancy in 1663 where he became a distinguished coppersmith, who benefited from the exclusive right to work brass and manufacture instruments of war and hunting, including horns and trumpets. His son, Fran\u00e7ois Raoux (c.1695 \u2013 1749), continued the family business. He set up shop in Versailles in 1741, and was appointed \u201cmaker of hunting horns to the King\u201d, supplying the royal hunts under Louis XV until his death in1749<\/a>. After Fran\u00e7ois Raoux, two of his sons took over the workshop. Pierre Raoux (1723 \u2013 after 1789) ran the original workshop in Nancy, while Joseph Raoux (1725 \u2013 1787) settled in Paris in 1749.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Although initially not a member of a guild \u2013 being a coppersmith \u2013 Joseph eventually joined the instrument makers’ guild in 1754 and obtained the title of \u201cmaster luthier maker of musical instruments<\/a>\u201d by decree of the King’s Council. He became the principal maker of hunting horns for the king under Louis XV and Louis XVI. Sources indicate that Joseph Raoux\u00a0was the exclusive supplier of hunting horns to the Crown<\/a>. His Parisian workshop, which moved over the years while remaining in strategic locations \u2013 the Quinze-Vingts enclosure, rue Tiquetonne and then Place du Louvre around 1781 \u2013 fulfilled orders from the king and the nobility. While continuing to supply the royal hunting parties, Joseph Raoux contributed to the renewed popularity of brass instruments in music.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Upon Joseph’s death in 1787, his son Lucien Joseph Raoux (1752 \u2013 1823) took over the Parisian workshop. After his initial training with his father, he briefly worked with a competitor, Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Corm\u00e9ry, before returning to the family business [1]<\/sup><\/a>. In 1790, amid the turmoil of the French Revolution, Lucien Joseph moved the workshop to rue Serpente in Paris, where it remained for over half a century. Its activity carried on despite political regime changes. Lucien Joseph Raoux played a major role in the development of the “modern” horn in France. Even before the Revolution, he endeavoured to adapt traditional hunting horns to meet the demands of the emerging orchestra. In 1791, with the help of the virtuoso horn player Carl T\u00fcrrschmidt, he developed a new model of orchestral horn known as the “solo horn,” equipped with five alternative tones, specially designed for solo parts<\/a>. A superb example of this type of solo horn, presented by Raoux to the young Louis-Fran\u00e7ois Dauprat on the occasion of his first prize for horn at the Conservatoire in 1797, is now held at the Mus\u00e9e de la Musique<\/em> in Paris. This symbolic gesture illustrates the close ties Raoux had with the elite musicians of his time. Indeed, Lucien Joseph collaborated closely with the most renowned horn players of the Paris Opera and the Conservatoire. Besides Dauprat, he is known to have made horns for virtuosos<\/a> such as Giovanni Punto, Heinrich Domnich, Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Duvernoy, Jean-Kilien Kenn, and Lebrun at the turn of the 19th century.
The workshop on rue Serpente was then operating at full capacity, combining tradition and innovation. Until his death in 1823, Lucien Joseph perfected the construction of natural horns without valves, making them highly sought after by solo horn players of the time. In the early 1820s, he was also one of the few makers to dare producing circular trumpets, an original instrument he intended for use in Romantic orchestras. The circular trumpet made in 1825 by Auguste Raoux for the Op\u00e9ra-Comique \u2013 sold at Vichy Ench\u00e8res on 7 May 2022 \u2013 demonstrates the short-lived but real success of these creations among Parisian trumpeters during the Restoration period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The stamp \u201cRaoux, seul ordinaire du Roi, rue Serpente \u00e0 Paris,\u201d present on the instrument in the 2 May 2026 sale, was in use at least since Joseph Raoux. It is worth remembering that Gustave Chouquet reported the existence of a hunting horn dated 1695, engraved \u201cfait par Raoux, seul ordinaire du Roy, place du Louvre pr\u00e8s de l\u2019odiance du ministre, \u00e0 Paris 1695\u201d, and whose location is unknown [1]<\/sup><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Thierry Maniguet has demonstrated, the activity of the Raoux family, in the mid-18th century, was mainly focused on the hunting horn. The case of Joseph Raoux is interesting. He was a horn player himself, and worked primarily for a hunting clientele. The archives clearly attest to this, since between 1769 and 1774, and then again between 1782 and 1783, the Marquis de Louvois alone commissioned some 20 horns from him, in addition to calling upon him for their regular maintenance [2]<\/sup><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was in this context that he obtained the title of ordinary to the King, which designated a regular supplier to the Court. Several surviving instruments bear mention of this title, along with the various addresses of the workshop. From the 1780s onward, the inscription evolved into “sole ordinary to the King”, which did not indicate an absolute monopoly, but rather a dominant position \u2013 probably in relation to hunting horns specifically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As discussed previously, the address of rue Serpente, found on our instrument, refers to the next generation, that of Lucien-Joseph Raoux, who took over the workshop after the Revolution. As was often the case, he retained the inherited titles, which had become real workshop trademarks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore, the inscription \u201csole ordinary to the King\u201d did not refer to a particular individual, but to the family history, whose prestige and continuity it denoted, in relation to royal hunting in particular. Besides this example, Vichy Ench\u00e8res already sold, in 2009, a horn bearing the engraved inscription \u201cfait \u00e0 Paris par Raoux, seul ordinaire du Roy, Place du Louvre\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Auguste Raoux to the end of an era<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

As early as 1814, Lucien\u2019s son, Marcel Auguste Raoux (1795-1871), obtained from King Louis XVIII the title of \u201cMaker of instruments to the King and the royal theatres\u201d. This title granted the workshop a monopoly on the production of wind instruments for the Court and royal institutions such as the Opera. It was during this period, in the first half of the 19th century, when natural horns and hunting horns stamped Raoux were considered the finest in Europe, and were sought after even in England, that the company reached its peak<\/a>. However, around 1828 \u2013 1830, the first valve horns imported from Germany appeared in Paris, introducing technological innovations that made the instrument fully chromatic and eliminated the need to insert the hand into the bell to produce certain notes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, the Revolution of 1830 brought an end to the regime, and Auguste Raoux lost his royal titles<\/a> with the fall of Charles X. Although he continued his activity, and in 1852 was granted the title of \u201cSupplier to the Emperor\u201d by Napoleon III, the Raoux had to contend with growing competition from other innovative instrument makers, such as Adolphe Sax, who won the competition for orchestral instruments for the French army in 1845. After decades of success followed by difficulties, Auguste Raoux finally sold the business in 1857 to another instrument maker, Jacques-Christophe Labbaye<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

When considered alongside Cr\u00e9tien\u2019s great crescent-shaped horn, also in the Vichy Ench\u00e8res sale on 2 May 2026, Raoux\u2019s hunting horn in D illustrates the evolution of the hunting horn between the 17th and 19th centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the 17th century, the first large metal horns replaced the small utilitarian instruments like the hooting horn, which produced only one sound. The crescent shape, developed in particular by the Cr\u00e9tien family, allowed for a slightly longer tube and expanded the instrument\u2019s range. Around 1680, these instruments were adopted at the court of Louis XIV, marking the rise in popularity of the hunting horn in royal hunting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the 18th century, the instrument evolved into the horn in D, a circular and much longer instrument, which allowed for the production of harmonics, making the instrument practically diatonic in the upper register. It was introduced into hunting bands at the instigation of the Marquis de Dampierre.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

While the first models were produced by the Cr\u00e9tien family, the Raoux family perfected them and contributed to their popularity, as is the case in particular with the “Dauphine” horn. This strong connection between the two workshops is essential in understanding the history of the instrument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, the horn gradually moved beyond the realm of hunting and into that of music. It was adapted for orchestral use through the addition of alternative tones, allowing the instrument’s standard pitch to be changed, and it became a fully-fledged musical instrument, thanks in large part to the contributions made by the Raoux family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Raoux horn in D offered here is the culmination of this evolution. While more compact than the larger horns of the past, it nevertheless retains the same function: to resonate outdoors. It embodies both to the continuity of a practice and the transformation of a signalling instrument into a musical instrument, directly linking the Cr\u00e9tien legacy to the Raoux tradition.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

In closing, let us quote the words of Jo\u00ebl Bou\u00ebss\u00e9e: \u201cThe conclusion we can draw from all this is therefore quite clear: Cr\u00e9tien and Raoux must share the distinction for having created the hunting horn in D that the Marquis de Dampierre took, in 1722, from among the various church horns, to have it adopted for the king\u2019s hunts in August 1723 and then, thanks to Lebrun, another supplier to the king, to turn it, in 1729, into the Dauphine, a name that disappeared with the Dauphin and was only replaced in 1818 by the workshop term \u201cDampierre horn\u201d.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
