Steinway & Sons: the gold standard

The story of Steinway & Sons began in New York in 1853, when Heinrich Engelhard Steinweg, a German piano maker who had emigrated to the United States, founded a piano manufacturing business with his sons. Having anglicized his name to Henry E. Steinway, he established what would become one of the most famous names in instrument making.

It is worth noting that the second half of the 19th century was a pivotal period in the history of the piano. The instrument underwent several alterations aimed, in particular, at increasing its sound power and enhancing its durability. Steinway & Sons played a key role in these innovations, filing many patents that contributed to the development of the modern piano.

In 1880, the company opened a new factory in Hamburg, Germany, to meet growing European demand. It is precisely in these workshops, in 2003, that the piano that will be auctioned by Vichy Enchères on 7 November was made.
