Le 12 d\u00e9cembre 2015 la maison de vente Vichy Ench\u00e8res dispersera dans sa traditionnelle vente de fin d\u2019ann\u00e9e consacr\u00e9e aux instruments de musique, la collection d\u2019Achille JUBINAL. Cette collection homog\u00e8ne constitu\u00e9e au d\u00e9but du XIX\u00e8me<\/sup> si\u00e8cle, est depuis cette \u00e9poque toujours rest\u00e9e dans la famille, se transmettant de g\u00e9n\u00e9ration en g\u00e9n\u00e9ration pour arriver jusqu\u2019\u00e0 nous aujourd\u2019hui…   <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

La collection d\u2019Achille JUBINAL que l\u2019on devrait plut\u00f4t appeler la collection SAINT-ALBIN\/JUBINAL\/DURUY a \u00e9t\u00e9 commenc\u00e9 sous le 1er Empire par Mr de SAINT-ALBIN. Amateur raffin\u00e9, il avait, en v\u00e9ritable curieux, achet\u00e9 le bel h\u00f4tel de Madame de SERILLY dans le Marais (l\u2019h\u00f4tel existe toujours au 36 rue Vielle du Temples), pour y installer ses collection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sa fille, Madame Achille JUBINAL, h\u00e9rita de cet amours les oeuvres d\u2019art et les charmants petits souvenirs du temps pass\u00e9. Pendant pr\u00e8s de trente ans, elle augmenta chaque jour avec un go\u00fbt des plus d\u00e9licats cette collection si originales qu\u2019elle a laiss\u00e9e apr\u00e8s sa mort \u00e0 sa fille Madame George DURUY.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le nom de DURUY vous parlera certainement si vous \u00eates amateur d\u2019histoire. En effet Georges DURUY est le fils de Victor DURUY, homme politique et historien fran\u00e7ais, ministre de l’Instruction publique de 1863 \u00e0 1869 sous le Second Empire, c\u00e9l\u00e8bre pour ses ouvrages sur l\u2019Antiquit\u00e9, Histoire des Grecs (1874) et Histoire des Romains (1885).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Comme nous l\u2019apprend \u00ab Les Arts \u00bb la collection JUBINAL est tr\u00e8s vaste. En effet \u00e0 cette \u00e9poque on avait un go\u00fbt prononc\u00e9 pour les collections. On retrouve donc ainsi des tableaux anciens (Jean Sim\u00e9on CHARDIN, Jacques Louis DAVID, Fran\u00e7ois BOUCHER, Jean-Baptiste PERONNEAU \u2026.) tapisserie, mobilier des grands ma\u00eetres de l\u2019\u00e9poque Louis XV et Louis XVI, des ch\u00e2telaines, montres, une collection de gants et bonnets\u2026.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Dans cet h\u00f4tel particulier un panneau entier \u00e9tait r\u00e9serv\u00e9 aux instruments de musique.
Il est int\u00e9ressant de remarquer l\u2019accrochage, si caract\u00e9ristique de cette \u00e9poque, avec les instruments accumul\u00e9s les uns \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 des autres sans espace vide, formant ensemble un \u00e9l\u00e9gant d\u00e9cor dans cet h\u00f4tel particulier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Voil\u00e0 ce qu\u2019\u00e9crit Carle DREYFUS au sujet de ce panneau : La reproduction que nous donnons d\u2019un panneau, o\u00f9 le beau portrait de Chardin et deux petits pastels de Boucher se trouvent encadr\u00e9s par une s\u00e9rie d\u2019instruments de musique du XVII\u00e8me<\/sup> et du XVIII\u00e8me<\/sup> si\u00e8cle, montre avec quel go\u00fbt est arrang\u00e9e cette collection. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

La curieuse s\u00e9rie des b\u00e2tons de chef d\u2019orchestre d\u00e9bute par le b\u00e2ton de maitre de chapelle du XVII\u00e8me<\/sup> si\u00e8cle en ivoire, enti\u00e8rement grav\u00e9 d\u2019une nu\u00e9e d\u2019anges musiciens jouant des instruments vari\u00e9s ; un autre \u00e9galement en ivoire de l\u2019\u00e9poque Louis XIII, porte grav\u00e9 un air de musique.  <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Puis, nous voyons les b\u00e2tons de chef d\u2019orchestre de F\u00e9tis, avec l\u2019inscription : Adolphe Samuel \u00e0 son illustre ma\u00eetre ; hommage de reconnaissance ; de Rossini, en corne avec filigranes d\u2019or et les initiales G.R ; enfin celui de Verdi en \u00e9b\u00e8ne et argent surmont\u00e9 d\u2019un petit buste du compositeur italien, cadeau offert par Verdi \u00e0 une de ses grandes amies. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nous apprenons aussi \u00e0 connaitre les diff\u00e9rents accessoires des maitres de danse du XVIII\u00e8me<\/sup> si\u00e8cle : la canne qui se d\u00e9monte et renferme un violon et son archet ; la canne-fl\u00fbte, les petites pochettes et l\u2019\u00e9ventail-pochette. Un petit tambour porte sur la bretelle en cuir qui le maintient les armes de France.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Vielle \u00e0 roue par R\u00c9MY<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Seule vielle \u00e0 roue caisse ronde connue par R\u00c9MY \u00e0 Paris. Elle porte une marque au fer sur le c\u00f4t\u00e9 du boitier avec les initiales.
Cette vielle de la fin du XVIII\u00e8me<\/sup> ou du d\u00e9but de XIX\u00e8me<\/sup> si\u00e8cle se distingue par son cheviller sculpt\u00e9 d\u2019une \u00e9l\u00e9gante t\u00eate de femme mais surtout par sa caisse en \u00ab luth \u00bb \u00e0 neufs c\u00f4tes altern\u00e9es d\u2019ivoire et d\u2019\u00e9b\u00e8ne.
La table est elle d\u00e9cor\u00e9e d\u2019une marqueterie d’\u00e9b\u00e8ne et d\u2019ivoire.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Une petite incertitude subsiste sur l\u2019auteur de cette vielle. En effet la famille R\u00c9MY est compos\u00e9e de plusieurs membre dont plusieurs sont susceptibles d\u2019\u00eatre les auteurs de cet instrument :
– Mathurin Fran\u00e7ois R\u00c9MY d\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9 en 1815, \u00e0 Paris, qui aurait alors r\u00e9alis\u00e9 cette vielle \u00e0 la fin de sa vie
– Jean Mathurin R\u00c9MY qui v\u00e9cu \u00e0 Paris entre 1772 et 1854<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Sur un ruban en cuivre \u00e9maill\u00e9 on retrouve l\u2019inscription \u00ab Adolphe Samuel \u00e0 son illustre ma\u00eetre. Hommage de reconnaissance<\/em> \u00bb.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Rare mandoline lombarde du XVIII\u00e8me si\u00e8cle, de Giovanni RAMUSIO faite \u00e0 Turin au mill\u00e9sime de 1789, dont elle porte la signature et l\u2019\u00e9tiquette. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Douze cordes, caisse en \u00e9b\u00e8ne \u00e0 vingt-trois c\u00f4tes, nombreuses d\u00e9corations en nacre sur le manche et le pourtour de la rosace sculpt\u00e9.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Pour tous les amateurs de mandoline le nom VINACCIA est une r\u00e9f\u00e9rence. En effet, cette famille de luthier de Naples a fabriqu\u00e9e pendant plus de deux si\u00e8cles ces instruments avec un savoir-faire et un raffinement rarement \u00e9gal\u00e9.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

L\u2019exemplaire de la collection JUBINAL illustre parfaitement ce savoir-faire. Cette mandoline \u00e0 caisse en \u00e9rable \u00e0 vingt et une cotes, a \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9alis\u00e9e par Antonius VINACCIA en 1784.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

On 12 December 2015, during its traditional end-of-year sale devoted to musical instruments, the auction house Vichy Ench\u00e8res will sell the collection of Achille JUBINAL. This coherent collection, assembled at the beginning of the 19th century, has always remained in the same family, being passed on from generation to generation, until today…<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The Achille JUBINAL collection, which should really be called the SAINT-ALBIN \/ JUBINAL \/ DURUY collection, was started under the First French Empire by Mr. de SAINT-ALBIN. He was an enlightened and curious amateur, and he bought the beautiful private townhouse of Madame de SERILLY in the Marais district of Paris (the house still exists at 36 rue Vielle du Temples), to display his collections there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His daughter, Mme Achille JUBINAL, inherited his love for works of art and charming little souvenirs of the past. Day by day, for nearly thirty years, she added to this collection with the most delicate taste and with a lot of originality. She left it to her daughter Mme George DURUY after her death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The name DURUY should be familiar if you are interested in history. Indeed, Georges DURUY is the son of Victor DURUY, the French politician and historian, and Minister of Public Instruction from 1863 to 1869 under the Second French Empire, and is famous for his works on Antiquity, in particular History of the Greeks<\/em> (1874) and History of the Romans<\/em> (1885).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the publication \u201cLes Arts\u201d tells us, the JUBINAL collection was indeed very vast, and reflected a pronounced taste for collecting all sorts of things. We find within it old paintings (by Jean Sim\u00e9on CHARDIN, Jacques Louis DAVID, Fran\u00e7ois BOUCHER, Jean-Baptiste PERONNEAU, etc.), alongside tapestries, furniture by the great masters of the Louis XV and Louis XVI periods, chatelaines, watches, a collection of gloves and hats…<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

In this private townhouse an entire panel was dedicated to musical instruments.
It is interesting to note the way in which they were displayed, so typical of this period, with the instruments hanging close to each other without empty spaces, together forming an elegant decor in this private townhouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here is what Carle DREYFUS wrote about this panel:
The reproduction provided of the panel, in which the beautiful portrait of Chardin and two small watercolours by Boucher are framed by a series of musical instruments from the 17th and 18th centuries, demonstrates the taste with which this collection was arranged.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The curious set of conductor’s batons begins with a 17th century Kapellmeister’s baton in ivory, entirely engraved with an array of musical angels playing various instruments; another baton, also in ivory and from the Louis XIII period, is engraved with a music score.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, there are the batons of the conductor F\u00e9tis, with the inscription: Adolphe Samuel to his illustrious master; grateful tribute. ; by Rossini, in horn with gold filigree and the initials G.R; finally, that of Verdi, in ebony and silver crowned with a small bust of the Italian composer, which was a present from Verdi to one of his great friends. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We also learn about the different accessories used by dance masters of the 18th century: the cane, which can be dismantled and contains a violin and its bow; the flute-cane, the small pochettes and the fan-pochette. A small drum features, on the leather strap used to hold it, the coat of arms of France.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Despite the description made by Carle DREYFUS in “Les Arts”, this violin cane is probably a creation of the 19th<\/sup>, not of the 18th<\/sup>, century.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Regardless, this is a rare and clever object. Indeed, the violin and the bow are hidden in the body of the cane.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Hurdy-gurdy by R\u00e9my<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is the only known round hurdy-gurdy by R\u00c9MY in Paris. It bears a brand on the side of the case with his initials.
This hurdy-gurdy from the end of the 18th or the beginning of the 19th century is notable for the carving of an elegant woman’s head on its pegbox, but above all for its lute-type body, with nine alternating ribs of ivory and ebony.
The front is decorated with ebony and ivory inlays.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

There remains some uncertainty as to who made this hurdy-gurdy. Indeed, the R\u00c9MY family included several members, a number of whom could have made this instrument, including:
– Mathurin Fran\u00e7ois R\u00c9MY, who died in 1815 in Paris, and who could have made this hurdy-gurdy at the end of his life
– Jean Mathurin R\u00c9MY, who lived in Paris between 1772 and 1854<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

A tribute baton of turned ebony, set at its ends with cabochons. In its central section, the name of F\u00c9TIS is engraved on a chiselled ring. The following inscription can be found on an enamelled copper ribbon: \u201cAdolphe Samuel a son illustre maitre. Hommage de reconnaissance<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Rare 18th century mandolin from Lombardy, made in Turin in 1789 by Giovanni RAMUSIO, of whom it bears the signature and the label. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Twelve strings, ebony body with 23 ribs, several mother-of-pearl decorations on the neck and around the carved rosette.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

For all mandolin lovers, the name VINACCIA is a reference. Indeed, this family of makers from Naples manufactured these instruments for over two centuries with a craftsmanship and a refinement rarely equalled.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The example from the JUBINAL collection perfectly illustrates this excellence. This 21 maple ribs body mandolin was made by Antonius VINACCIA in 1784.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
