Jean Baptiste Vuillaume (1798 \u2013 1875), luthier de son \u00e9tat, a paradoxalement beaucoup apport\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019archeterie fran\u00e7aise du XIX\u00e8me<\/sup>. Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume travaille un temps pour Fran\u00e7ois Chanot avant d\u2019\u00eatre embauch\u00e9 par Nicolas Antoine L\u00e9t\u00e9, chez qui il r\u00e9alise ses premiers violons et dont il devient l\u2019associ\u00e9 en 1825.
Il s\u2019installe \u00e0 son propre compte \u00e0 partir de 1827 au 46, rue des Petits Champs \u00e0 Paris Ier, adresse que l\u2019on retrouve inscrite sur la bo\u00eete de m\u00e8ches de rechange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vuillaume s\u2019int\u00e9resse tr\u00e8s t\u00f4t aux archets et multiplie ses collaborations avec tous les plus grands archetiers fran\u00e7ais dont Jean Pierre Marie Persoit, Dominique Peccatte et Claude Joseph Fonclause pour ne citer qu\u2019eux.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Jean Baptiste Vuillaume n\u2019est pas, pour \u00eatre tout \u00e0 fait honn\u00eate, \u00e0 l\u2019origine de l\u2019archet \u00e0 m\u00e8che interchangeable. C\u2019est l\u2019atelier Pajeot qui en a l\u2019id\u00e9e originale. Mais c\u2019est bien Vuillaume qui a su le d\u00e9velopper de mani\u00e8re ing\u00e9nieuse et le fabriquer.
Le 30 novembre 1835, il d\u00e9pose m\u00eame un brevet d\u2019invention pour ce mod\u00e8le, qu\u2019il produira pendant 15 ans.
L\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat de ce syst\u00e8me profite aux musiciens qui n\u2019ont pas l\u2019opportunit\u00e9 de se rendre fr\u00e9quemment dans les grandes villes. Ils peuvent ainsi rem\u00e9cher eux-m\u00eames leur archet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab L\u2019archet est en effet vendu avec une note explicative dans une bo\u00eete contenant plusieurs m\u00e8ches pr\u00e9par\u00e9es, serties \u00e0 leurs extr\u00e9mit\u00e9s dans des tubes de cuivre qu\u2019il suffit d\u2019introduire dans une fente appropri\u00e9e, au niveau de la plaque de t\u00eate et dans l\u2019\u00e9crou du m\u00e9canisme de tension, au centre de la hausse coll\u00e9e sous la baguette. Faites glisser la virole de la hausse ainsi que le recouvrement, dans le m\u00eame sens ; d\u00e9vissez enti\u00e8rement le bouton, enlevez la pi\u00e8ce de cuivre plac\u00e9e dans la hausse, d\u00e9tachez la m\u00e8che de cette pi\u00e8ce de cuivre, et, avec la pointe de la vis du bouton, faites sortir de la t\u00eate l\u2019autre bout de la m\u00e8che ; replacez la nouvelle m\u00e8che en proc\u00e9dant dans l\u2019ordre inverse de celui qui vient d\u2019\u00eatre indiqu\u00e9, et en ayant soin de faire passer la m\u00e8che dans la virole avant de l\u2019adapter \u00e0 la pi\u00e8ce de cuivre de la hausse.<\/em> Si lorsque la m\u00e8che est plac\u00e9e, on remarque que l\u2019archet a une tendance \u00e0 gauchir du mauvais c\u00f4t\u00e9, on y rem\u00e9diera en retournant la m\u00e8che, de mani\u00e8re que le dessus se trouve dessous. Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume worked for Fran\u00e7ois Chanot for a while before being hired by Nicolas Antoine L\u00e9t\u00e9, where he made his first violins, and becoming his business partner in 1825. He set up on his own in 1827 at 46, rue des Petits Champs in the First district of Paris, which is the address that can be found on the box of spare hair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vuillaume took an early interest in bows and actively collaborated with all the greatest French bow makers of his time, including Jean Pierre Marie Persoit, Dominique Peccatte and Claude Joseph Fonclause to name a few.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Jean Baptiste Vuillaume did not have the original idea for the bow with interchangeable hair; the Pajeot workshop did. But it was Vuillaume who developed the idea ingeniously and who manufactured it. On 30 November 1835, he even filed a patent for this model, which he produced for 15 years. This system is of benefit to musicians who do not have the opportunity to travel regularly to major cities, as it allows them to rehair their bow themselves.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab\u00a0The bow is indeed sold with an explanatory note in a box containing several prepared hair sets, held together at each end by copper tubes which can simply be inserted into the appropriate slots, one in the head plate and the other in the nut of the tension mechanism, glued under the stick in the middle of the frog. Method for fitting the prepared hair sets<\/em><\/em>:<\/p>

Pull the ferrule of the frog as well as its pearl slide, in the same direction; completely unscrew the button, remove the copper part placed inside the frog, remove the hair from this copper part, and, with the tip of the button screw, push the other end of the hair out of the head; replace with a new set of hair by proceeding in the reverse order to that which has just been indicated, taking care to insert the hair through the ferrule before attaching it to the copper part of the frog. If, when the new hair is in place, the bow has a tendency to bend on the either side, this can be remedied by fitting the wick the other way around, so that the top is now facing out. If it happens that some hairs are not stretched as much as the others, one simply needs to slightly wet the hair, and dry it over a low heat.<\/em><\/p>Patent for the invention and improvement of bows with fixed frog and prepared hair sets.<\/em>
