Le 2 d\u00e9cembre 2010, nous avons eu le plaisir de vous pr\u00e9senter un violon de Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume (1798-1875). Apr\u00e8s plusieurs ann\u00e9es d\u2019apprentissage, le luthier Jean Baptiste Vuillaume (1798 \u2013 1875) s\u2019installe \u00e0 son propre compte \u00e0 partir de 1828 au 46 de la rue Croix-des-Petits-Champs \u00e0 Paris. D\u00e8s le milieu des ann\u00e9es 1840, ses instruments jouissent d\u2019une excellente r\u00e9putation dans le milieu musical europ\u00e9en tant sur le plan de la sonorit\u00e9 que pour leur ressemblance particuli\u00e8rement convaincante avec les instruments des grands ma\u00eetres italiens.
1858 est une date tr\u00e8s importante dans la riche carri\u00e8re de Vuillaume. D\u00e9sireux de se consacrer uniquement \u00e0 la fabrication, il d\u00e9cide d\u2019abandonner la partie purement commerciale de son activit\u00e9 (la revente d\u2019instruments anciens, cordes et accessoires). Il semble -d\u2019apr\u00e8s sa correspondance abondante- qu\u2019il ait eu, d\u00e9j\u00e0 \u00e0 cette \u00e9poque, la volont\u00e9 d\u2019atteindre la barre des 3000 instruments fabriqu\u00e9s dans son atelier.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Il d\u00e9m\u00e9nage ainsi son atelier faubourg des Ternes – \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque en dehors de Paris – afin d\u2019y trouver le calme et la s\u00e9r\u00e9nit\u00e9 dont il a besoin pour mener \u00e0 bien ce projet. Ayant un besoin certain d\u2019affirmer sa personnalit\u00e9, il abandonne \u00e9galement le principe des instruments en copie pour adopter son propre style. Les instruments sont en vernis plein, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire sans d\u00e9grad\u00e9s (une pratique alors courante chez ses pairs qui tentent ainsi d\u2019imiter artificiellement l\u2019usure faite par le musicien sur son instrument).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

La composition du vernis est elle-m\u00eame modifi\u00e9e. Il devient plus clair et un peu plus souple. La num\u00e9rotation redevient syst\u00e9matique ainsi que la datation et la pose des marques au fer \u00e0 blanc. Ses instruments sont de v\u00e9ritables chefs-d\u2019\u0153uvre. On consid\u00e8re g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement la p\u00e9riode allant de 1858 \u00e0 1875 comme celle de la maturit\u00e9 de Jean Baptiste Vuillaume.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Le violoncelle mis en vente par la salle des ventes de Vichy au mois de juin 2011 est un exemplaire tout \u00e0 fait remarquable de cette derni\u00e8re p\u00e9riode. R\u00e9alis\u00e9 au mill\u00e9sime de 1866, il porte le num\u00e9ro 2679 et pr\u00e9sente toutes les caract\u00e9ristiques des instruments r\u00e9alis\u00e9s par Vuillaume \u00e0 cette \u00e9poque.
Le vernis, qui est appliqu\u00e9 en plein, est d\u2019un bel orang\u00e9 bien transparent.
Le paraphe au crayon de bois inscrit dans la partie sup\u00e9rieure du fond du cot\u00e9 des cordes aig\u00fces indique les 2 derniers chiffres de la date ce qui est typique. Ici, 66 pour 1866.
Le num\u00e9ro de l\u2019instrument (N\u00b02679) est inscrit en deux endroits diff\u00e9rents sur le fond.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

L\u2019\u00e9tiquette indique sa derni\u00e8re adresse : 3 Rue Demours-Ternes \u00e0 Paris.
Enfin, les deux petites marques au fer \u00ab Vuillaume \u00bb sont pos\u00e9es comme il convient sur la table et sur le fond. Elles n\u2019ont pas \u00e9t\u00e9 noircies et mesurent 7 millim\u00e8tres de longueur ce qui les rend difficiles \u00e0 localiser sans l\u2019aide d\u2019un endoscope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L\u2019instrument est dans un \u00e9tat de conservation remarquable et ne souffre d\u2019aucunes retouches. La qualit\u00e9 de sa sonorit\u00e9 ne fait aucun doute et devrait \u2013pour paraphraser Vuillaume lui-m\u00eame \u2013 \u00ab faire joliment l\u2019affaire d\u2019un bel artiste \u00bb.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

On 2 December 2010, we had the pleasure of offering at auction a violin by Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume (1798-1875). After several years of apprenticeship, violin maker Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume (1798 \u2013 1875) set up on his own in 1828 at 46 rue Croix-des-Petits-Champs in Paris. By the mid-1840s, his instruments had gained an excellent reputation in the European musical circles both for their sound, but also their particularly convincing resemblance in appearance to the instruments of the great Italian masters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The year 1858 is very important in Vuillaume’s extraordinary career. Wishing to devote himself solely to making, he decided to close the trading arm of his business (the resale of old instruments, strings and accessories). According to his correspondence at the time, of which there are many extant examples, it appears that he had, early on, set himself the objective to manufacture 3,000 instruments in his workshop.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

To this end, he moved his workshop to Faubourg des Ternes \u2013 which was outside of Paris at the time \u2013 in order to find the calm and serenity he needed to carry out this project. He also felt the need to assert his personality, and as a result stopped being purely a copyist and developed his own style. These new instruments were fully varnished, instead of being antiqued by applying varnish in gradients (a practice then common among his peers, who were trying to artificially imitate the wear from the player).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The composition of the varnish itself was modified. It became clearer and a little softer. The numbering of instruments became systematic again, as well as their dating and branding. These instruments are true masterpieces. The period from 1858 to 1875 is generally considered to be his mature period.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The cello up for sale at Vichy auction house in June 2011 is a truly remarkable example from this last period. Made in 1866, it bears the number 2679 and displays all the characteristics of instruments made by Vuillaume at that time. The varnish, which has been applied in full, is of a beautiful transparent orange. The handwriting in pencil inscribed in the upper part of the back, on the treble side, corresponds to the last two digits of the date, which is typical; in this case 66 for 1866. The number of the instrument (2679) is written in two different places on the back.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The label includes his last address: 3 Rue Demours-Ternes in Paris. Finally, the two small “Vuillaume” brands are positioned where expected on the inside front and back. They have not been blackened and only measure 7 millimetres in length, which makes them difficult to locate without the aid of an endoscope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This cello is in a remarkable state of preservation and has not been altered at all. The quality of its sound is beyond doubt, and the instrument should \u2013 to quote Vuillaume himself \u2013 \u201csuit perfectly a fine player\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
