Le violoniste belge Arthur GRUMIAUX (1921-1986) est de ces artistes que l’on dirait volontiers touchés par la grâce. Au cours de sa vie, il manifesta un véritable don pour le violon dont il devint l’un des plus grands interprètes de sa génération, tout en faisant montre d’aptitudes certaines pour le piano. Jeudi 7 juin 2018, Maître Etienne LAURENT mettra en vente à Vichy le demi-queue Steinway d’Arthur GRUMIAUX…
« Ce grand violoniste belge, qui a connu une carrière internationale, avait la particularité d’avoir mené de front des études de violon et de piano », détaille Maître Etienne LAURENT.
Aussi, lorsqu’il se concentra sur le violon, il resta dans le même temps irrémédiablement attaché à son deuxième amour qu’il pratiquait, au gré de son temps libre, sur un demi-queue Steinway, en bois laqué noir.
« Il s’agit d’un piano de tout premier ordre pour un musicien, poursuit le commissaire-priseur. En effet, en matière de Steinway, marque de piano la plus illustre, nous distinguons deux productions, l’une newyorkaise, l’autre provenant d’Hambourg. La seconde, plus prestigieuse, caractérise notre instrument daté de 1961. Arthur GRUMIAUX y a probablement composé certaines de ses œuvres qu’il enregistrait et dont il effectuait non seulement la partie au violon, mais aussi celle au piano ! » La légende raconte même que le chef d’orchestre suisse Ernest ANSERMET, ignorant ce double talent, aurait félicité le violoniste d’avoir déniché un si bon pianiste…
A la mort du violoniste en 1986, le piano connaît un nouveau souffle et se met désormais au service d’une belle cause : la fondation Arthur GRUMIAUX, basée à Gand en Belgique. Fondée par Amanda GRUMIAUX, l’épouse du musicien, l’association œuvre depuis plus de vingt ans en faveur de l’accès au plus grand nombre à la pratique musicale.
“Amanda GRUMIAUX a légué les instruments de son mari afin qu’ils soient prêtés à de jeunes musiciens talentueux qui n’ont pas forcément les moyens financiers de se procurer un bon violon, archet ou piano. Pour cela, ils doivent justifier d’un projet professionnel et s’engager à entretenir l’objet emprunté.”

Trop encombrant et difficilement déplaçable, le piano doit toutefois aujourd’hui quitter la fondation.
« Estimé entre 25 000 et 30 000 euros, il devrait intéresser les grands concertistes, mais aussi les mélomanes attachés à GRUMIAUX ou même peut-être le conservatoire de Vichy. »

The Belgian violinist Arthur GRUMIAUX (1921-1986) was an artist touched by grace. He had a real gift for the violin, becoming one of the greatest violinists of his generation, but he was also a good pianist. On Thursday 7 June 2018, Maitre Etienne LAURENT will be in charge of the sale the Steinway medium grand piano of Arthur GRUMIAUX in Vichy.
“This great Belgian violinist, who had a successful international career, was unusual in having studied both the violin and the piano”, explains Maitre Etienne LAURENT.
Whilst he concentrated his efforts on the violin, he remained at the same time always attached to his second love, which he practiced in his free time on a Steinway medium grand piano, in black lacquered wood.
“This is a high quality piano for a musician”, indicates the auctioneer. “Indeed, Steinway, the most prestigious piano brand, had two production centres: one in New York, the other in Hamburg. The latter, which produced the best instruments, is the one where our piano was made in 1961. Arthur GRUMIAUX probably composed some of his works on it, which he then recorded, performing not only the violin part, but also that of the piano!“ Legend has it that the Swiss conductor Ernest ANSERMET, unaware of this double talent, would have congratulated the violinist for having unearthed such a good pianist.
Upon the death of the violinist in 1986, the piano experienced a new lease of life when it was bequeathed to the fondation Arthur GRUMIAUX, based in Ghent in Belgium. Founded by Amanda GRUMIAUX, the musician’s wife, the association has been working for more than 20 years to promote access to music for as many people as possible.
“Amanda GRUMIAUX bequeathed her husband’s instruments so that they could be loaned to talented young musicians who do not necessarily have the financial means to acquire a good violin, bow or piano themselves. In order to qualify, applicants must have a worthy professional project and commit to the good maintenance of the instrument on loan.”

However, due to its bulk and the difficulty to move it, the piano must now leave the foundation.
“Estimated at between 25,000 and 30,000 euros, it should interest great concert performers, but also music lovers interested in GRUMIAUX, or even perhaps the Vichy conservatory.”
