“More than anyone else, Patrick fostered connections between France and the United State within the collecting community. Long before the advent of e-mail and the internet. Patrick was building connections between individuals and dealers in the U.S., sending otherwise hard-to-find cornets and trumpet over […] It was alway a treat to visit his apartment in Paris to see his collection”

All collectors have an extravagant side to them that makes them fascinating to interact with. The network of friendships that resulted from this collection is, in my opinion, inseparable from the collection itself, and might even be its primary interest.”

Op. cit., Larigot spécial n°IIl, p.2

Patrick Delile was a passionate musician, the secretary of the Association des Collectionneurs d’Instruments à Vent, the editor of its journal Le Larigot, and a true connoisseur of brass instruments. This is illustrated by two special editions of Le Larigot dedicated to his impressive collection of cornets and trumpets, for which he wrote precise technical notes as well as descriptions of their musical qualities.

Comprised of instruments from around 50 established makers, this collection includes rare, and sometimes important, models, in a remarkable state of preservation.

The collection focuses mainly on pre-WWII French and American instruments.

His interest in collecting such instruments led Patrick Delile to establish strong connections with other collectors worldwide, in particular in America, and this before the advent of the digital age.

These connections allowed Patrick Delile to add to his collection instruments that were rare and hard to find in France. He would often trade French instruments for models by Bach, Conns, King and other American makers with his collector friends in the US.

The man who could play from memory and with precision various solo parts by Louis Armstrong left behind a wonderful collection, a portion of which has been sold on 1 May 2021, in order that they continue being played and duly appreciated by passionate musicians.

His focus was on acquiring instruments meeting the following criteria: high quality of making and finishing, and the presence of innovations aimed at improving the sound, playability and playing comfort.

Almost all the instruments have been restored and are in playing condition. Some makers are abundantly represented as they are considered the most prestigious or innovative; they include Besson and Couesnon in France, and Conn, King, Martin and Olds in the US.
